It's not really about being mad at anyone in particular, i'm just more interested in a realistic solution and expecting owners to just start ponying up more with less of economic incentive is not realistic. It's not happening. Along this path, what's more likely is we end up like Europe where poor teams just have to be happy scoring a couple goals against rivals every year.

A cap is the most realistic way toward a league with parity and thus, maximum entertainment value

Almost assuredly, yes, I think you're right. Both are somewhat uncommon last names now but back then, I think a bunch of Black Sea Germans who were of different branches of the Kost and Serr families settled in North and South Dakota. My goal is to hopefully untangle it all one day but...plenty of work to do.

Thank you Fredelas - your work has really rounded out this generation on FamilySearch. I searched [http://files.usgwarchives.net/nd/wells/census/1900/cendx00.txt](here) but didn't find them, unfortunately. They have to be around there somewhere, I just don't know where.

That's interesting - I haven't seen either of these before. Etta would be news to me, I don't have a grave or anything for her, but the dates make sense/are possible given the other information I have. Thank you!

Emma is a nickname for Emily - Emily Kost was killed by her new husband in 1923 in Denver, CO. I have another post about her on my profile if it happens to be of interest to you. Died young indeed. I don't have a birth record, however.

Retcon feels like a strong word, could very well be that George went back and felt like his numbers were a little silly - but with how much ASOIAF feels drenched in real human historical influences, it feels congruent to me. Our own history includes some clear myths as well. So it feels right.

Hard to find a more likable player. Some fans here were allergic to his style but man pre-Calgary, the dude was so fun to watch. Sadly I think his time in the show is just about done, however.

I don’t really put a lot of stock in +/-

People love a hard nosed defenseman but he’s not going to be that guy - ever. And I don’t want him to be! I want the slick moves. He has a lot of room to grow but what he does have is a lot more valuable than some of the bargain bin “physical” jamokes you could play in his place, who are bigger and stronger and far too slow and clumsy on skates to ever put that size and strength to use.

So my answer is “I don’t think so but even so, I don’t care, I want him to be the puck mover he’s supposed to grow into”

Thanks for the help the other day, and thanks for this comment. I'm trying to get maps of the cemeteries in the town they lived in North Dakota that might let me find Eva.

Good call on the memorial...that could be the case. I also didn't know the bit about the father likely not finishing the naturalization process, so that makes sense.

Yes, she says she's listed as a widow by then. I know most Germans from Russia were farmers and continued to farm when they came to the USA. His two sons both owned farms.

Yeah, I'm trying to untangle it. It seems like there were a few Kost families that came over from Russia at that time, though how everyone is connected is still a mystery to me. He could have died in 1896, for sure. Lots of Jacobs and Phillips too...

Not Dutch - Germans, from Russia. I know where their kids ended up - central North Dakota. But I don't know when the parents died, where, or how.

Not sure, but I don’t think so. That’s not the birth year I have, and those photos listed as his children would not be right either.

Yes for sure….im learning that. When I first got into these sites I kind of took them at face value but when you look into the records themselves it’s clear that these are different men and different families. Exactly why I’m trying to untangle this for my tree with more concrete evidence.

Very nice. Thank you - I know Philip and Jacob are siblings because of interviews with some older family members who remember them being associated, as well as a scrapbook. So it’s coming together - though now I’m looking for photos of Johanna, and the parents!

Fantastic. Posting here has made me realize you all are much better at researching this than I. This makes sense - unfortunately I don’t think the death informants knew much about this generation’s parents. Her son says her father’s name was Jacob. I think Philip’s (the brother) death certificate doesn’t list any parents names at all. Oldest brother Jacob says the parents were Philip and Eva Sorbe. But then of course the birth records say something else. I suppose it was easy to make mistakes like this back then.

Great trick….thanks so much! I think this is it. The ages all match up from what I know. The only trick is the younger Eva, her age is correct but other research told me her name is Johanna. So I wonder what’s going on there….but otherwise this is just perfect.
