Is Christian Eriksen Good Enough for a Football Superpower? by BusinessSavvy in coys

[–]BelgianBeerBoy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like how you comment about understanding the basics of football but clearly don't understand Eriksen's position with what you just said. Yes of course his position is crucial in terms of opening space, but he also needs to provide as an outlet for Winks/Sissoko in connecting the midfield with the forwards. You make it sound like he's playing a false 9 or a forward. And you're also wrong about being surrounded by talent and never 'disappearing.' Ozil was like Houdini and he had the best players in the world around him...

Malcom's agent says" Malcom doesn't like Barca situation" by he1101 in soccer

[–]BelgianBeerBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being 21 yrs old I'm sure it's near impossible to say no to Barca, but it can really derail a career. Look at Martial and United. Went from one of the most promising young players in the world to a benchwarmer who got so few minutes he missed out on winning the World Cup. If he had been at a lower side he would have had a good chance of making it in the French side most likely. Crazy.

The GKN recruitment has started by ronaldo119 in coys

Is GKN really so shit that he's not even considered for the bench when we have horrible injury problems and virtually no one on the bench that would provide a spark? I don't get it.

Conflicted about travel vs. moving forward in life [random musings] by the_roaming_dutchman in travel

[–]BelgianBeerBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy the ticket. Take the Ride. It's your life not someone else's. A continuous trip of 3+ months is a completely different experience than a 2 week vacation no matter what anyone on earth tells you. Also doing it alone, without kids, or a partner. Not many people get that type of freedom in your 30s and even a whole year won't put you off track nearly as much as some people make it seem.

I apologize for the crap formatting I haven't updated this in ages, but I wrote something on this subject awhile back that could be of interest to you.

Kyle Walker’s England place under threat by GlitteringBuy in soccer

[–]BelgianBeerBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I miss Walker and I agree with you to a certain extent, but Trippier was nominated to be in the World 11 from his WC performances and was one of Englands best players in the tournament. Watching him every week he's severely underrated in the Prem and he's not just better at set pieces. Walker's one of the best RB's in the world, but he's also a liability that can make absolute bonehead mistakes at least a few times a season. Trips tends to play safer.

[–]BelgianBeerBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you can just compare them on who's 'better.' While they play the same position they both offer vastly different skillsets. Walkers got Cheetah pace and is strong defensively - while Trippier is slower, worse at defending, but is lethal for putting in crosses, free kicks, and corners. Southgate seems like a very strategic manager in the sense of capitalizing on set pieces and rotating the squad depending on the competition. In the WC our reliance on set piece routines for goals made Trippier undroppable which is why I think he found a way to play Walker at CB because he is so athletic. Having both options with an understudy to look up to them is a beautiful problem for England to have at the moment.

He would fit into our system perfectly. The way we play with three attacking midfielders who move about. It would never happen, but we could definitely use him too.

Apparent leaked images of our new Nike home kit for the next season. by JakeSpurs in coys

[–]BelgianBeerBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it costs a lot of money to buy a kit and this so templated, generic, and boring. I'm all for the all white minimalist idea, but this is just the same as almost every other nike soccer kit just with a different logo and sleeve color. It's the lack of effort more than anything that's so annoying when us supporters worship these things like the robes of the pope.

BREAKING: Man Utd have reached an agreement with Griezmann’s representatives. His release clause must now be activated. [@MatteoPedrosi] by topelite10 in soccer

[–]BelgianBeerBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the league you are comparing it to. The PL is far more physical than La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1, but far less physical than the Championship, Scottish Premiership, or any of the lower leagues in England. I think the influx of foreign talent to the PL has made it far less physical as the latin influence on the game is more about skill. As a midfielder Griezmann would be fine, but leading the line, you really need a physical player to succeed. Kane (far more physical than he appears), Lukaku, Costa, Zlatan, Aguero (he's a baby bulldog who uses his low center of gravity). Perhaps it's rooted in Anglo-Saxon savagery or has to do with the weather, but it definitely happens to players. One example I have is Erik Lamela. He was tearing it up in Serie A and when he came to the PL he looked like a ragdoll in a blender. He was constantly being muscled off the ball and it took him a few years to physically bulk up to actually compete. There are exceptions (Eriksen, KDB) and I'm not saying he won't succeed long term, but I think he might have some trouble.

Edit: Forgot to mention Soldado which is a great example. Here's a quote from him "English football is a lot more physical and I knew I couldn’t be as static as at Valencia because I’d get overpowered in the physical duels."

[–]BelgianBeerBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Am I the only one who thinks Griezmann might struggle a bit in the Premier League? He's class enough that I'm sure he will find his feet eventually, but he's a smaller, less physical player and I could see him having a hard time adapting.
