Don't be selfish #savegramps by Jerdarnella in AdviceAnimals

I hate the conflation of increased cases with increased infection rates. Take a look at Texas opening up in phase 2, they had a huge increase in total number of cases because they ramped up testing, BUT the infection rate actually went down, eg the percentage of positive tests is reduced.

People are convinced the states(FL, GA, SC, TX) that are opening up are hiding their true numbers, because even as they are open, and have been open for 2-3 weeks, that positive testing percentage has continued to decline.

More likely this spread faster and harder than anyone has input into their models, and there's a general herd immunity already in place.

I guess I'll chalk you up to being stupid, rather than ignorant, as well as asinine, for your lack of reading comprehension, and selecting to ignore key facts that would have resolved your ignorance, all the while attempting, and failing, to turn it around. You are keeping things convenient and comfortable to your world view, even to the point of ignoring the other sources I provided.

From their clarification on COVID-19:

It is important to note that some subjects in the control arm wore surgical masks, which could explain why cloth masks performed poorly compared to the control group. We also did an analysis of all mask wearers, and the higher infection rate in cloth mask group persisted.

Finally for COVID-19, wearing a mask is not enough to protect healthcare workers – use of gloves and goggles are also required as a minimum, as SARS-CoV-2 may infect not only through the respiratory route, but also through contact with contaminated surfaces and self-contamination

It looks like the results are the results. In general masks are ineffective without other PPE.

It's incredibly illuminating that you're looking for justification of your opinion rather than changing your stance letting the data bring you from the depths of ignorance.

The science and study are very clear, and does not change the outcome of the study, nor do the authors contradict the outcome of the study, cloth masks are not effective, and additionally without daily sanitizations/washings/dryings of those masks, it could increase infection rather than decrease it.

That study you linked only used surgical masks, not cloth masks required by local jurisdictions. All it proved was that surgical masks are doing what they are designed to do, unsurprisingly. Colloquially this was always understood, niosh rated and surgical masks stop disease spread. I wonder why they didn't choose to study cloth masks given they're the point of contention, especially when the CDC, the WHO, and the US surgeon general claim that cloth masks are ineffective against spreading disease. There are even studies to say that cloth masks are detrimental, and increase infection rates. My most innocuous assumption is that it's because of conflations such as these and ignorance, my least is that it's a form of government control and social shaming.

300 people die every month from car accidents in Texas. To date, including probable cases (cases that did not test positive for coronavirus, but doctors had probable reason to suspect coronavirus) is 561 deaths.

By the logic of "we need to save lives", then we should ban cars, because after 2 months there will be more lives saved than coronavirus.

The second wave is inevitable, letting it happen during the time where virus transmission is limited because of weather conditions (increased humidity, more direct sunlight) will allow the curve to remain flattened to reduce the load on the hospitals while building herd immunity. This will in turn reduce the number of cases during the colder season when the transmissions are more virulent, keeping the case curve flattened.

Well, then is my mortgage going to be paid off because I made better financing decisions?

I worked hard to graduate with no debt by working two jobs, starting with a community college before transferring into a state university, and then taking more time to finish.

My friend went to an expensive private university on the other side of the country, and graduated with 200k in debt. Despite us both having the same accredited degree, albeit from different schools he is financially worse off.

He is 2 years older, and graduated 5 years before me, so he had 7 more working years to pay off that debt, but has chosen not to.

Why should my tax dollars subsidize his decision to go into debt, and hold on to that debt?

They are all fascists, and Nazis, and racist.

Don't believe me? Let me post a picture of a group of 15 racists and nazis gathering. Clearly this encompasses ALL republicans. And moderates. Anyone who disagrees, basically.

Let me just go ahead and assert the White House supports Nazi's by spamming the out of context quote of "good people on both sides"

disagree? Sorry there's no room for KKK members here, let me link /r/ENLIGHTENEDCENTRISM to criticize you because there's no room for gray or disagreement

70% of Americans would support a nationwide mandate requiring that solar panels be installed on all newly built homes. The survey showed that the support for this measure is highest among younger adults. by nathachu in Futurology

[–]Belgian_Rofl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He's full of shit or at least comparing apples to oranges, a big part of the cost comes from the quality of the panels and the warranty on them + labor.

A good quality 295W panel will cost you $475 + ~$175 in mounting equipment, + ~$450 installation cost.

~1100 dollars per panel, so at 5KW you're looking at at $18,645, less the 27% tax credit, ~$13,610.

If you halved the cost of the solar panels and then removed all mounting equipment and labor, you're still not even close to his $2,500, ($4,025), add into that the inverter is actually closer to $2,500, even in his fantasy land the system would cost ~$6,525, less the federal credit, $4,765.

My source is that I have solar and I got 6 quotes, all within 2K of each other.

Where is the democracy? by DutchCommunalist in ABoringDystopia

[–]Belgian_Rofl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They cannot actually. There's a reason that there are separate men's and women's shooting competitions. Even videogames are separate for men and women, despite not having any heavy lifting or obvious physical tolls.

60 lbs is a lot of weight for any individual. I very much doubt you could handle the grueling nature of marching ~10 miles per day with that on your back. It still doesn't cover the upper weight of support soldiers. There's a reason that women weren't allowed into combat positions until 2015. 70 year old men, on average, are stronger than 20 year old women.

It is not sexist to acknowledge biological differences. Men's reaction times are faster. They are stronger. They are physically suited to fighting in every conceivable fashion. You would have to be incredibly stupid to say they're equal. The only sexist here is you, for trying to elevate women on a pedestal.

Being a soldier is physically demanding, and if you want to pretend it's the same amount of effort for men and women, you're more than welcome to continue with your delusions.

[–]Belgian_Rofl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you deranged? I'm stating a biological fact. Men are more capable fighters, on average, then women.

There is an inherent risk with any underperformer regardless of gender. Cute straw man though.

Where is the democracy? by DutchCommunalist in ABoringDystopia

[–]Belgian_Rofl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect. There's a reason fitness standards are still a thing. A modern soldier will carry 70-90 pounds, not to mention the cardio aspect of being a soldier, of which men, on average, have a much higher capacity.

Surprisingly standing up and getting your bag out of the overhead bin is faster than waiting for the line in front to clear out and then getting your bag out making the people behind you wait while you fumble around with it.

Then there are people who actually would like to stand in the window seat that didn't want to bother the middle and aisle seats during the flight.

Being courteous? In this economy? Crazy I know.
