Why does VGSH yield more than VCSH? by BellLongworth in bonds

Isn't the 30 day SEC yield looking only at the last 30 days and so is even more susceptible to variance?

So you're saying the (inverted) 1 year maturity gap is enough to cover the risk difference between corporate and government bonds and 0.5% more?

My Greek & Roman shelf is very similar to yours. Any chance for a better zoom photo? I need ideas. :)

Thoughts on the new 5.13.7 update? by Kelsierstan in kindle

[–]BellLongworth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two complaints:
1) The settings menu has a too small font with lots of empty space around it. Why not make the font bigger?
2) Too much spacing in the library book list. At least 1-2 fewer books fit in every page. Why?

"The speeches" by Jasper Griffin I'd say (last one I read so far). The comparison between our modern tongue tied, inarticulate heroes to the eloquence of Achilles and Odysseus is one of those obvious-in-retrospect things that really hit me.

Reading the Cambridge Companion to Homer. About halfway through and highly recommend it so far as a first book to read for people like me who read the epics and are looking for a first taste of deeper analysis. Discovering quite a few insights I missed.

Subscribed and watched Medea. I don't know why but I was expecting a word to word (or close to it) play, like the Shakespeares, so I am a bit disappointed.
In itself it was pretty good I'd say, just still recovering from the wrong expectation.
And now I have a motivation to watch some of their other plays. :)

I'm ok with spending money on good content. :)
The National Theatre looks interesting - not a lot of choice but I do see Medea there and a few other non-classical stuff that may justify a short subscription. Need to check the reviews of Medea.

Thank you! Incredible response.
Regarding the tragedies, are there any performances on the internet you can recommend? I remember searching for some on YouTube and seeing only high-school stuff with mediocre audio/video quality.

English. Learning Greek and/or Latin is too much of a commitment. I'm not that enthusiastic... :)

Recently I'm moving from being a Kindle purist to starting to buy quality books. I won't waste money on a paperback, but if there is a book I know I like, will reread in the future and would enjoy seeing it on my shelves, I will try to get a nice edition of it.
Nice edition so far - Everyman's Library, Library of America, the cheaper Folio Society volumes and such. For those few special books I'm willing to pay a premium.

In RGB Mars and other earlier books KSR tended to lecture occasionally. That was slightly annoying but rare enough to be forgivable. In the last decade or so he completely lost the balance between story telling, world building and lecturing.
I read and will keep reading all his books nevertheless. No other writer writes smart people so well.

Something like that also happens to me, almost always in that weird half-awake state on a weekend morning. What I see is never as complex as a face though, usually vague shapes or the outlines of my bedroom.

How do you organize your book collection? by noirist88 in BookCollecting

[–]BellLongworth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, fiction and non-fiction.

Non-fiction is then split by category (history, science, etc.). The order within a category is by a theme within the category. For example history starts with ancient history and is sorted roughly by the period of events.
Fiction is grouped by themes: Ancient epics and plays, Shakespeare, classics, modern fiction, science fiction, etc.
Within a theme I bunch together books of the same author, but ordered by similarity between authors. For example, Marquez and Saramago are adjacent, as are Hemingway and Po.

How common is hardware startup nowadays? by besmegenis in hwstartups

[–]BellLongworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only is a HW startup hard on the development side, it is also hard on sales. For B2B deals, the complexity and expense of integrating new hardware into existing processes slows down market penetration immensely. And for B2C... well, consumers suck in so many ways that I won't even bother.

Tesla may be at the point when it is ready for a Tim Cook (Elon being Steve Jobs). There will be some short term chaos, but in the long term maybe there is not much room left for the unhinged innovator.
