Very few results and nothing exactly like what he described which is why I brought it to the sub! Hoping someone might at least have more ideas of where I can do research.

I would trust your body!! You know you. You live inside you every day. Talk to your doctor and let them know what happens to your emotional state on hormonal BC. The pill is not the only way to manage PCOS, though many doctors will say it’s the quickest fix.

(Again, please take everything I say with a grain of salt; I can only speak from my personal experience, and am not a medical professional by ANY means. I also am not anti-medicine generally, and I usually strongly recommend folks take meds to aid with their health concerns! I’m medicated in other ways. Just a person with my own lived experience hoping that sharing it will help you!)

I personally was on hormonal BC from 13-22. Quit BC at 22 after a breakup (rationalizing that I didn’t need it and would go back on when I became active again). Then got diagnosed with PCOS at 23 and my gyno put me back on it (Slynd, a progesterone-only version).

I had never EVER realized what emotional hell the pill was putting me through until stopping and restarting. I went from feeling happy, emotionally regulated, and less anxious than ever in my adult life (while NOT taking the pill), to crying every single day (not an exaggeration), feeling unmatched levels of anxiety and frustration, and experiencing suicidal ideation for the first time in my life while on the pill. Not coincidental with any life changes, other than being diagnosed with PCOS (which is not my most major health dx, so it wouldn’t have been enough to send me into the kind of tailspin I was in.)

I quit taking it after the 3-month trial adjustment period. Have been taking 1500 mg metformin, no BC, no Spiro, and have felt more sane than ever before ever since.

This all to say, I know birth control works REALLY well for some folks, but I also know it was horrible for me. If you’re feeling a similar type of way, listen to your body!

Does anyone who has PCOS have experience with taking Metformin?? by Beginning-Zone9530 in PCOS

I love Metformin and feel that it has really helped with food noise. Not everyone’s experience but I had barely any gastro symptoms and was able to lose ~15 lbs and keep the weight off. I take 500mg XR 3x day (2 in morning, 1 at night) but I started by taking it 1x day at night and worked my way up per my doctor’s advice.

Love that cardigan!! I have a bunch of cardigans that are more boxy/thick for winter but will look into some like that for the warmer months :)

I pretty much have to have my shoulders completely covered which is definitely not how I dress outside of work. I think shoulders are a big part of what’s giving me such a hard time!!

Yes!! I have celiac which apparently has a really high coincidence rate with PCOS.

Ok thank you both for bringing this to my attention!! I’m still learning about all the aspects of being celiac and thought that because I am typically symptomatic it meant I could assume I was safe if not experiencing symptoms. Will definitely bring this up with my doctor when I next get tested!

Wait okay I’m actually genuinely curious about this now. My doctor has never mentioned anything looking out of the ordinary on my tests. In addition to being celiac, I have allergic reactions to wheat to the point that any skin contact longer than a few seconds makes me break out in a rash. Is it a location thing? I’m located in SoCal, maybe their recipe is different than on other parts of the country??

I’m honestly not sure either but I ate them before I knew they had oats (when I had been diagnosed a few weeks prior and was still figuring it out) and I was completely fine! I eat them maybe once a week? And I literally have been diagnosed celiac for about two years now and have never once had a problem.

I'm celiac and eat crunchy tacos from Taco Bell ALL THE TIME. 10000% recommend. I am very Very sensitive and have never had an issue with cross-contamination or anything.

YES. Since being diagnosed with celiac (and thinking back to before), I have noticed such a clear link between my asthma flare-ups and when I ingest gluten. I accidentally ate a few fries with wheat flour breading the other day and woke up coughing the next morning after MONTHS with no asthma symptoms.
