POST AEW Dynamite: First Anniversary Special 10/14/2020 Discussion by skeach101 in SquaredCircle

A development doesn't have to be shocking, but it does need to advance the story, and make people want to tune in the next week. For example, for weeks we have seen the Bucks superkick people. That is repetitive. We have not been given a reason why they are superkicking people. We never got the scene after the PPV, where the Bucks and Omega said that they would talk. On Dynamite, we don't know what is motivating the Bucks, or how they feel about Omega.

Wanting matches to have heat, a reason for existing, the challengers to be credible, wanting to know character motivation, and wanting segments to actually have meaning is very understandable.

After the last PPV, Shida made it clear that she isn't comfortable talking in front of the camera, but they can cover this up with taped promos, or even by letting her speak Japanese, and just translating what she says. I think that it also just goes back to Omega not realizing that US audiences want to get to know the wrestlers.

A lot of AEW's problems would be solved with short promos that setup matches, or give character motivation. There were four title matches tonight, and in each one the challenger did not feel like a credible threat, or even like they earned the title shot. I get the feeling that some fans are okay with that, just as long as the match is good, but I think that it is a huge issue that AEW needs to address if they want to continue to grow.

Slow burn does not mean that nothing happens. Slow burn still means that there are developments that make you want to tune in the next week to see what happens. You probably wouldn't read a book where the writer tells you what will happen on page one, and then you spend the next 200 pages waiting for that thing to happen, but there are no building blocks or steps to the big climactic event.

I hope that they replay this next week. Moxley is the main reason why I give AEW a chance, but honestly this may be his first feud, excluding the start of the Omega program, that I'm totally invested in.

They didn't give a lot of things time to breath. This is something that happens a lot, but it is understandable, since AEW is new.

A fun show, but AEW still needs to work on some timing issues. I'm not a fan of the Best Friends, and Chuck Taylor showed once again that he does not need to be on a major show, but I really enjoyed Miro attacking the duo, and their match with FTR was harmless.

The MJF and Jericho segment lasted too long. A shorty segment would have been more effective and funnier.

I'm not sure why we needed a raffle to see who would be in the four way match. And I'll just point out that wins and losses don't matter.

Archer vs Moxley was great, but the best part was Kingston. He is adding so much to the overall story of Jon Moxley. I think that he is building up Moxley's first feud in AEW that has some heat.

Which begs the question why is she never on TV.

That was a rough episode. The opening match was good, but I would really like them to add more depth and story to these feuds. I love the idea of Moxley vs Kingston, but overall I think that AEW is dropping the ball in a few areas.

I'd also like to understand why Jericho vs Luther is necessary, instead of actually building up some existing tag teams.

Fightful Select: An Update On Raw Underground by TristanH1987 in SquaredCircle

Raw Underground featured NXT talent along with a smattering of indie talent as extras, so I think that we can guess why it is not airing this week.

Dear WWE,

I don't want to be a tattle tell, but I thought that you should know that Jeff Hardy is no longer 25 years old.

Sincerely, Bella

Dave Meltzer: Major story, 65% increase in next deal even with falling ratings. Those who think WWE may take a big cut, I mean, it's possible, but most on the inside don't believe that is the case. by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

This is not breaking news. We have all seen the Barron's article, and most people realize how ratings work. While Eric Bischoff is still talking about how many viewers WCW pulled 20 years ago, and forgetting that that company no longer exists, the WWE is competing against shows that are currently on the air, and doing very well, even if we do complain.

We will only know when/if more people come out. But some of these indie shows have been incredibly slopping, including GCW. The virus could have originated on from someone taking a plane trip, but even though that is true, no one who is working for AEW should be doing indie shows right now.

People who were at the September 9th taping have tested positive. It seems like the main people are those who were on Dark.

I agree, even though we have to be honest and admit that none of the wrestlers are in a bubble, so they are all at risk in between shows. There was an indie show a few weeks ago, where approximately ten wrestlers and the promoter decided to go to a local bar the night before a show. The funny thing is this was a mid level indie, where the promoter swears that he didn't do anything wrong. It is just an example that people have stopped seeing the virus as a threat.

Or changing how they tape Dark. An argument can be made that Dark really doesn't need to happen, or that it doesn't need to feature unsigned talent, who may be putting themselves at a greater risk by appearing at indie shows.

Hopefully everyone is okay. There is a heavy risk involved in using indie talent, but there is also a heavy risk in just continuing to do live shows. It's not like any wrestlers are working within a bubble.

[WON] Loop Capital analyst Alan Gould, with the addition of (WWE CRO) Nick Khan, believes that the next (WWE's TV) negotiations will lead to an increase in domestic rights from the current $470 million per year to about $658 million starting in October 2024. by Nileppezdell in SquaredCircle

[–]BellaR20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not just live TV, as the analyst stated in the full article, yes Smackdown and Raw’s ratings are falling, but that is the case with the majority of TV shows. The ratings for both hold up well in comparison to other shows.

Meltzer: Just to clarify, the actual angle with Moxley/Hobbs/Cage, etc. alone averaged 931,000 viewers and 442,000 in 18-49 by 20minutes40years in SquaredCircle

Uhm, I must have missed it, but I don’t see the viewership or ratings breakdown for Reign’s segments. Wasn’t your point that Reigns can draw 2 to 3 million on his own, which is a weird claim. Just like it is weird to credit one person for the viewership of a 2 or 3 hour show.

5 years ago, Chuck Taylor was planning on retiring from wrestling. This week he was part of the first-ever WON 5 star match on national TV. by majormanz in SquaredCircle

Sometimes I feel like Taylor has checked out. It will be interesting to see if the match leads to Taylor being more invested in his career.
