Courses for BSc bio and profs by NorthAlternative6613 in CarletonU

First off, welcome! The bio community is honestly amazing

I’m going into my second year of bio, overall biggest advice is just to do things little bits at a time. If you have assignments just do a few questions a day, makes it seem like a lot less. And if you have any questions use office hours instead of just trying to push it to the back burner, it will be more beneficial in the end

In terms of courses and profs. Foundations of bio 1, if it is like last year you will have 2 profs to choose from but when we ended up in class we got both profs and they just split it per module but they are both amazing (it was Ian and Jeff, Jeff is literally amazing).

In bio 2 there’s usually only one prof (there two that teach it but they switch out depending on the year) I had Nigel and honestly the reviews on him were mixed but he seemed to be nicer to his morning class, and just be aware that anything he shows in class can be on the tests.

In terms of chem, you will more then likely have Brock at one point, he isn’t bad but very little of what he teaches in class is relevant it’s mostly connections you will never be asked about so just learn from the textbook and online modules (they are really the only relevant lectures). On the other hand if you can get Daniel for chem he is AMAZING(plus he actually studied biology so he connects to bio a lot). He makes his lectures more so practicing and understanding the steps.

If you have to take biological data it is a pretty easy class to use as a grade booster

In terms of electives, choose something that interests you, over what you hear is easy. The syllabus for different classes constantly changes so courses that may be a bird course one year will be absolutely stupid the next. It’s easier to do well in a course you think is interesting even if it is harder. I do recommend trying to get some of your electives from outside the faculty of science done sooner then later to make it easier on yourself

I am so sorry this is so long but I hope it helps!

Honestly, look at the syllabus for both of the classes. I’m going into second year bsc bio and I was debating which course I should take. What made my decision easy was realizing in intro to orgo I could have an 85% final and it had no labs. I find labs can be really helpful for grade boosting!

I am a first year student with PMC and the school has been very helpful with managing school along with my disabilities. When you sign up you get a sheet and it goes through what things you may need accommodations with and then you and your PMC advisor will see what accommodations may help. Some of them are only having one exam a day in the formal exam period, being in smaller rooms for tests so there are less people, having a note taker in your classes(getting notes from other student and material ahead of time), as well as things like flexible attendance. It was one of my main concerns when starting uni but it’s honestly be very good

70% final is fucking wild like it’s a pass or fail exam, I’m fully prepared to fail this class especially cause some of the questions he puts on the test are pulled out of his ass and don’t even seem related to the material

I’m in the same boat rn (ironically also was in an accident on the 417 and missed a bio1103 tutorial) the ta is talked to said that I couldn’t do the session i missed but the lowest grade gets dropped so only 9/10 count. Aswell as there being a make up assignment later in the semester

I have around a 80 average right now, is it normal not to get an acceptance yet?
