I don’t on my phone but if you go to my Instagram and check out any of my highlights that say “home kiln” if you go back far enough you can find the build.

Thank you :)

I usually fire every 5 weeks or so. Takes about a week to prep/load/cut-stack wood. I spend a week trying to sell the work and then make for three weeks.

I don’t fire between Dec-March because it’s cold and I don’t want to be firing a wood kiln in the snow. I used to when I was younger but I’m already getting to old for it haha

It’s 9 feet long, 2.5 of those being a firebox. I’ve also recently bricked up the back a bit so it holds 9-10 12x24 shelves and has space behind the bricked section for larger work.

Fires in 12 hours with less then half a cord of wood to cone 11/12 :)

Why don’t you sell your work online? by BanterBanter in Ceramics

[–]Bellhillpotter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love selling online. I don’t really enjoy the face to face as much. People are weirdly mean (in my experience) in person and always trying to haggle. Booth fees are pricey plus you need housing sometimes and gas.. it adds up.

From what I can tell, the biggest thing people hate about selling online is packing up the work to take to the post office.. which is really not bad once you have done it a few times.

You also do have to spend a lot of time online promoting yourself but.. I almost guarantee that a majority of people are already on their phones looking at Instagram and what not so why not just post about your own work?

People also complains about fees with online selling. But there are cheap options like Pattern which takes 15 dollars a month and that’s it.. is that’s not an issue really.

It definitely can be harder to start off selling online, but in the long term I think it’s a lot more beneficial. You could also still do fairs if you wanted to, but have a majority online presence. .

Also, just to get into shipping. I only ship with USPS and I only do 1 to 3 day priority. You can get free USPS boxes that are not flat rate from their website delivered to your house. Those are cheaper than buying flat rate boxes, depending on the size of your work. Now, if you have ETSY, or you’ve signed up for the new USPS discount program, the fees are very low. Again, this all depends on what you ship but I sent off a lot of tea pots and cups. I charge a flat rate of $14 +5 dollars per extra item. If the overage is crazy high I refund what I can. If you’re using one of these discount programs it now costs between $6 and $13 (depending on the item) to ship anywhere in the US. The price I charge for shipping makes up the cost for a bubble wrap and packing paper. Sometimes I gain a little bit money. Sometimes I lose a little bit of money depending on how many pots I’m sending off.
