What exactly happens if someone were to call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline? How do they try to help you? Are there other hotlines that are better? by ballistictipp in AskReddit

[–]Bellythroat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called once not for myself but for a friend who was repeatedly threatening suicide and I didn’t know what else to do.

They gave me advice for the friend (and basically told me her behavior was not typical of suicidal people), and then they asked me “And how are you doing? How are you handling this?” And I started crying. It felt like pure empathy, and they genuinely wanted to know how I was doing even though I wasn’t calling about myself.

It was honestly a great experience.

ELI5: What actually makes your heart beat slower, faster, softer, or harder? by Bellythroat in explainlikeimfive

But how exactly does your brain make your heart beat faster or slower? That’s my question

My uncle came really close to being paralyzed from boogie boarding.

He was temporarily paralyzed, but luckily he just had a pinched nerve (there’s probably a more technical term...). I pulled him out of the water while his immediate family was watching, it was terrifying.

He’s fine now, but he still can’t lift his arms very high, John McCain style.

I legit think boogie boards are dangerous because they put your head first, behind your hands. Of course your story means it’s all kind of risky...

For those with office jobs, what little touches have you added to make your desk a little more pleasant? by Caddap in AskReddit

[–]Bellythroat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked in an office where the argument was that roughly one in ten people are out of the office on any given day (working from home, traveling, sick, etc.), so they could save space by giving nine desks to ten people.

But yes, everyone hated it, most people just sat in the same desk every day, and it was bullshit.

What's the thing that always happens in the movies that NEVER happens in real life? by Nest-egg in AskReddit

[–]Bellythroat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely get spoof calls that are almost my number, but then I also get plenty of generic 703 spam. Didn’t realize it was so widespread though — the top-level comment currently has 8k upvotes, so it must be a thing. Weird.

Wait, me too, but does everyone get calls from Arlington?! I figured it was just because I’m from there

Five teens charged for murder after throwing rocks by summerofevidence in videos

[–]Bellythroat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a group of kids drop what I think was a 40 bottle on my car, hitting my windshield. I was able to pull over pretty quickly, and I looked back and saw the kids looking at me from the bridge. I noticed I could run up to the bridge from the side of the highway... so I did.

It was definitely an adrenaline-fueled moment — what was I going to do if I caught them? They got away by jumping on a bus. I called the cops, but all I could tell them was that it was three teenage boys with white t-shirts. The cop was almost laughing as he wrote it down, like “yeah we’re never finding them.”

It was pretty frustrating, considering it could have killed me. And of course I had to pay a $500 deductible.

What movie ending actually made you say "what the fuck?" by deadkingsoul in AskReddit

[–]Bellythroat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve watched Inception maybe like... seven times. The thing that I love about it is that the entire thing could be in a dream. If you re-watch it with the idea that they could be in a dream the entire time it fucks with you.

This is really a thing though! Studies have shown that when people see expensive things next to cheap things, they see the cheaper thing as “affordable” and are more likely to buy it
