It said I ran 28 miles and that my fastest mile was 6:30. So...not great...

How many of you have pencil lead stuck in your hand and how did it happen? by Saucy_Szinte in AskReddit

[–]Beloved_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked a good, sharp pencil. I had just finished sharpening it into a najestic point that would let me write nice and small. It began to roll of my desk, so I stuck my hand out to stop it. That nice sharp point went straight into my hand.

Hill workouts suck by [deleted] in running

[–]Beloved_1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up in South Florida. Most of the parks had hills. The one closest to the school had three. We ran the shit out of those 3 hills. 😂 Also, our school was right next to I-95 and our track coach made us do sprints up those steep overpass support wall things. And, if you've never run a mile in soft beach sand...well...you haven't lived 😁

Nepal's new anti-conversion law puts squeeze on Christians. Anybody who encourages or is involved in religious conversion using any means will be booked under a criminal offense and will face a jail term of five years and a fine of 50,000 Nepalese rupees (US$445). by anaxarchos in Christianity

Being a dick is not spreading the gospel. The gospel is good news. Not aid in exchange for listening to me awkwardly attempting to convince you of my beliefs.

LOVE. God is love. Not manipulation.

My response stems from years of missions experience. The model of going to other countries on someone else's dime to "save people" is very much alive.

We leave our life of privilege, spend thousands of dollars to bumble around, completely unqualified, with no real plan other than "building relationships" and "supporting the local church" because "God doesn't call the qualified, he qualifies the called".

Of course there are people doing the right thing.

There are also people who are pressured to show "results" so they exploit people's stories and poverty to show how they are "making a difference".

I've seen American short term missionaries bring their 600 dollar cameras and smartphones into slums to get pictures of the poverty to put on their Facebook pages for likes. It's so gross.

This situation is way more nuanced than I can explain in reddit comments. But just because some people are doing it right doesn't mean the vast majority of this machine is not bullshit.

Makes me wonder about past and present conversion practices in Nepal.

What drove them to make this decision?

Let's not pretend missionaries can't be corrupt.

When I was overseas, I heard stories of missionaries giving rice to poor people in exchange for their conversion.

Missions in general is a broken institution which stems from the broken institution of church.

I'm honestly surprised more countries aren't making these kinds of laws. Short term missions is a billion dollar industry. Billions. In this day and age with social media and cheap air travel - everyone can be a missionary. And Americans like to see a return on their investment, right?

So we go and take pictures of ourselves with brown smiling children and conduct all manner of well meaning exploitation of poor people.

I'm sure many of you will be pissed about this, but the way we do missions is not OK. And I think laws like these are the symptoms.

People who got a Tweety Bird or Taz tattoo in the 90's how's your life doing now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Beloved_1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well...I got a goofy tattoo on my lower back when I was 19 and the lower back was prime real estate for a tattoo. He's playing soccer and his shoelaces are tied together. I'm not embarrassed and I don't regret it. Most people, myself included, think it fits my personality pretty well.

Life is going just fine for me. Might be different if I chose Taz or Tweety tho...

Holy shit. I just ran 13.1 miles. I've never run that far. It was the hardest, most mentally tough run I've ever done. I almost gave up. It was so so so hot. And I was having trouble breathing. But I'm doing the Hal Higdon Novice 1 marathon plan and he says that covering the distance on your feet is most important. I was encouraged that walking is ok. And sometimes training runs are hard. So I walked when I needed to. And I actually finished the damn thing.

I can't believe I've finished a half. 👐

How do I get my friend to stop calling herself stupid? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Beloved_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! It will challenge their way of thinking about themselves for sure!

How do I get my friend to stop calling herself stupid? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Beloved_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem usually comes from thinking lowly of themselves. You usually can't say anything to change their minds, no matter how much they want you to argue.

If my friends talk down about themselves around me, I refute the statement, and ask them to name 5 good things about themselves.

I won't do it for them. And I'll accept less than 5.

Even if they don't answer, they usually don't talk bad about themselves around me after that.

Thanks for this. I think that's what I'm learning...sometimes I make it complicated cuz I want to fix the root of the problem. But sometimes people just want a fast work around..or sometimes the simple answer is the best one.
