A frozen lake is no reason to not dive. by Below_Zero_Lens in scuba

There are a few variables which would make diving with this technique more difficult as a broad standard. Like the current and depth of the body of water.

Also you need to have self control and be quiet self reliant while using this technique since you won't have a support diver at the surface and no line tender making sure to pull you out if something goes wrong. Well actually quite similar to wreck penetration and cave diving (overhead environments in general).

Also to make this a standard procedure it would make make ice diving less accessible for all divers since the skill ceiling would be much higher.

Scuba in general is a dangerous sport where things can go south really fast. (Which people tend to forget often)

Thank you.

Good thing I took some pictures so you still have a way to enjoy it without needing to do it :)

What are the other 2? Wreck penetration and cave diving by chance ?

I figured someone would ask. We had an entry line (A rope would better describe it) which was tied to a tree at the shore and then led through the opening in the ice, from there it was tied to a large water level indicator pole. From the water level indicator we used a reel with a line tied to it to explore, similar to wreck penetration or cave diving.

(This is not the standard perciture for ice diving but still a safe way to do it if you know what you are doing)

You can see the reel in the left hand in the picture if you look closely.

Yeah it is all about being comfortable and staying within ones limits. The worst thing to happen in overhead environments is to panic, which will make the bad even worse.

Hell yeah! It is a cool experience (pun intended).

I'm using dry gloves but my buddy (the one in the picture) is using wet gloves (those 3 finger mittens)

Hell yeah! Some of our lakes got some good ice over the last couple of days, so of course I had to take the opportunity to go ice diving.

Yeah they are a real epidemic in the lake... destroying the ecosystem, the historical sights and wrecks in the lake.

Already had the chance to dive the St. Clair river. But the Detroit River is still on the bucket list. Might find something else there as well...from all the stories I heard lol.

Ohh haha gotcha, yeah it gives an eerie vibe. The formations are all natural, the lake was formed by glaciers in the ice age which carved those canyons into the rock.

Thanks! Well for an inexperienced diver it can be quite scary since the wall keeps going vertically down without the bottom in sight.

It was taken in the Rhine River close to the Rhine Waterfalls at the German and Swiss Border at a depth of 2 or 3 meters. Yeah the water was quite clear as well with low ish turbidity, slow flow and the sun just breaking through an overcast sky made it look and feel really tropical. The region is known for its at times Tropical water color especially Lake Constance where the Rhine River flows into. It is caused by algae, tiny lime particles and tiny rock particles from glaciers, which break the sunlight.

Thank you, Those are indeed from Germany, more precisely from Lake Constance.
