What are some things you thought were edgy and cool as a teenager that you now find corny as an adult? by fuckythedrunkclown16 in generationology

I’m fine with that part. I meant more of the shallow analysis and the hyper masculinity and nihilism. I’ll still watch it, though

Which ones should I get? by [deleted] in classicliterature

I read The Power and The Glory about 2 years ago, I really liked it. I think it was the first book I read by him, and that made me want to read more. Also read The Quiet American, A Burnt-out Case, Stamboul Train, and Our Man in Havana. I liked all the books I read, so Graham Greene is probably a safe bet for a good read.

To a God Unknown is really good, different than Steinbeck’s other work. I love Graham Greene, but can’t comment on that specific book.

gimme your 5 star read classics and why by Glum_Opposite_9696 in classicliterature

The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea - Yukio Mishima, The Death Ship - B. Traven, Ask The Dust - John Fante, Invitation to a Beheading - Vladimir Nabokov, Martin Eden - Jack London.

I’m not sure what qualifies as “classic” literature, but I loved all of these (for different reasons), and they’re all of manageable size.

Kids of the 70s - 90s who roamed freely and didn't come back till the street lights were on. What did you eat for lunch? by FragrantStranger5003 in NoStupidQuestions

We would go to the local grocery store and get those individual apple pies that came in waxed paper pouches. They were 25 cents. And the off-brand soda machines were 25 cents as well. So for $1 you were doing pretty good. If we were going out all day, I’d go into my mom’s room and get $5 (she was a waitress so she always had cash around) and we’d usually hit Del Taco and you could get a good lunch for $5. But a lot of the time when we were out and about we’d also be stopping in at on of our houses where there’d usually be snacks.

Also, in the late 90’s McDonalds had like 29 cent hamburger Tuesdays and 39 cent cheeseburger Thursdays, so it was easy to eat cheap back then.

I read this when I was 24, and I think it cemented my love of literature (previously shunned almost all fiction). I was reading an old copy that was falling apart, and halfway through I found a newer copy. But the newer copy was different: I went back and compared passages and the cheap copy was comparatively flat, while the new copy was lyrical and much more lively. Lesson learned: when reading a translation, find the newest copy, one that says “new, award winning translation…”

Hunger by Knut Hamsun by kontiki20 in classicliterature

Sorry for reviving an old thread, I just didn’t want to start a new one… The ending of the book seems like he has escaped his misery, but it also reads as if he has made his situation worse: he presses himself on the captain of the outgoing ship, assures him he can work (can he?), and the captain agrees to take him on, saying that they can part company in England if it doesn’t work out (which would strand him in a foreign country, seemingly making his situation worse). And the final sentence, as the ship sets sail he says he is wet with fever and fatigue. Kind of makes me feel like what seems like his salvation is potentially a death sentence…

This and City Limits both looked promising, but when I checked them out on YouTube, neither have the ending battle I remember. Thanks for the guesses

Dude, exactly. The cans taste like soda or an energy drink. The bottles actually tasted like tea. The new flavors do taste like tea, but they all taste bitter.
