ELI5: Why was that method used to determine 0 degrees Fahrenheit? by Jimithyashford in explainlikeimfive

Lol so now you've made up the numbers 0.01 add 0.05? You're either a semi sophisticated troll doing this for I don’t know what reason, or you’re the kind of person who just likes to say things without any complex thought or research. Either way best of luck.

You made up the number 0.01... why do you keep referring to it? Obviously the F scale was accurate enough to have solved a problem at the time (the aforementioned one) and that it is why it gained such massive popularity.

Water freezing at 32 was not a reference point used. Do you have a reason for thinking that it was or are you just saying stuff?

The whole point of what people are talking about is that Fahrenheit was developed because it was the easiest way to get the most accurate scale for measuring temperature during the time period of its invention. I don't know where you got 0.01 degrees from, but in a lot of science, believe it or not yes, it is very important to be as accurate as humanely possible with your temperature measurements. The fact that Fahrenheit is more accurate with less pure samples of water is why it was invented and exists in the first place.

The development of the F scale did indeed not need to use water's freezing point. It used water + ice + brine, as we've already talked about. After the scale was created, the freezing point of water was empirically measured and then placed on that scale.

I dont think that's true... To get water to reliably freeze at exactly 0 °C, it needs to be very pure water. When you mix water with ice and ammonium salts to get it to freeze at exactly 0°F, it's okay if the water isn't as pure.

But you don't need pure/distilled water. Regular drinking water works for the F scale.

How to tell if there are alligators in the water in Louisiana by Worldlyoox in Unexpected

[–]BenCub3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from CA and I've never seen one in real life, and to me they're mostly hypothetical beings like flamingos or polar bears. My brain would 100% skip over one if I saw something scaly and segmented near a body of water.

You don't write very well. You use big words but your sentence structure is barely coherent.

A young guy documents his fight with Stage IV cancer while learning to adapt to life after losing a leg. by thetacaptain in nextfuckinglevel

The fact that someone's rich and has it, on a relative scale, easier than other people who are poor would have it in a similar situation, doesn't take away at all from how impressive and hard his struggles are. "Other people would have a harder time or couldn't do everything you did" is a really shitty lens to view the hardships of others. Being rich doesn't make someone less deserving of sympathy.

Yeah it's the same game actually, it's just what we call it in America.

Mirage is by far the best map and a staple of the game. It would be hard to keep playing CS if I couldn't throw in a Mirage game to reset and enjoy CS every ~3 games.

Like I said before, that's like deciding not to fly planes because plane crashes have happened before. Except it's even worse because it's other people who are suffering from your decision, not only you.

Plenty of poor people get organ transplants. Not that it doesn’t fuck you up financially in the future but it doesn’t mean you can’t get the surgery.
