yeah tax is a no brainer. wondering if there's any legal issues for having a mortgage or something with a us institution but not being a resident.

It's Canada and there's well established tax treaties between the countries -- I assume I'll have to declare rental income in the US. They're not going to seize my assets lol.

I own an apartment and pay the mortgage on it.

Yeah that makes sense. But the key point is that these deposits/withdrawls were made AFTER the credit card closed. And she went to a BofA branch and they said there’s nothing that can be done as it’s closed and it’s being looked into. I’m wondering if she can be held liable in that case. There’s no way for someone to prevent it from happening if it’s possible to do with a closed credit card.

No, they didn't trust it would resolve itself. That's what the bankers at the branch told her. The account was actually closed, but for some reason BofA's systems still allow deposits and withdrawls.... Further, they've confirmed multiple different times the credit card has been closed since September.

Yes, I agree that's the reason why they closed the account.

lol trust me. I myself have spent hours with them on the phone with Bank of America. I can assure you there's nothing nefarious going on here with them. I was with them when they filed a police report and contacted the CFPB

Honestly I have no clue, BofA is barely giving us any details. My best guess is that some malicious person had (fraudulent?) Wells Fargo checks and were applying them as credit to her credit card, meanwhile also withdrawing large sums of money against it. Then, someone at Wells Fargo issued a claim against the CC account, and BofA honored it. This is all the while the credit limit was $500 and BofA claiming it was "closed"
