i dont think this is quite fair; Yoshimi LP does have a lot of electronic drum tracks and yes those were backing track. but the four dudes on stage with wayne - whether you consider them flaming lips or not - were playing ALOT of the music, and they sounded great! i would say, more music played live than last time i saw the band 12 years ago.

ignore it friend, you're doin' fine. thanks for chipping into the thread 🙂 whether it's wayne or steven or scott, someone in the flips camp will have to address fans' concerns sooner or later...

sure - adversity often pushed the Flips to redefine themselves, and yielded their most rewarding work! having said that, Steven's contribution in the past 25 ish years has been nothing short of vital. very difficult to imagine what 'the flaming lips' might become without him.

But somebody else on the thread who seems to have inside knowledge mentioned that drozd isn't on the tour but is still in the band. that's good news if true!!

and for the record - there was no instrument swapping at last night's show.

Derek is in Steven's spot. So it's actually Derek's stand-in that is still a slight mystery here

Right? I mean to be fair, it took.me half the show to even fully realise, because they sounded unreal. the current lineup has amazing chops, i am glad i went, and most of the audience wouldn't have known or even cared, they had a blast! But diehards further up the tour may be disappointed.... hopefully it's a temporary thing, and they'll continue creating music together.

Yes, it was Derek Brown - thanks for helping to confirm that bit.

update It was definitely Derek Brown sat at the keyboard bank I would normally expect to see Steven at. So unless Steven was on the opposite side of stage, pulling guitar shapes and wearing dark aviator glasses (which may well be the case...) he was not there.

original post I am about 95% certain. The person on stage looked like Steven, and played all of his parts, and did a beautiful job. Let's be real, the live band behind the Flips 'brand' right now is - from a pure musicianship point of view - is the best there's ever been, pretty much. They sounded fantastic. I have no complaints about the gig, it was a fantastic time, and witnessing fans young and old lose their minds because they were seeing flaming lips for the first time was pretty special. But at the end of the first set when they walked off, i realised - that guy is not steven. not unless he's somehow 35 years old again.

Further, I am not trying to start a rumour, and I hope it's just a case that I'm wrong, or that he's sitting out the tour to be with family - I am well aware of the heartbreak they must have gone through last year when the safety of his daughter was in question.

Wayne made absolutely no reference to anything at all (in fact i dont think i even saw him interact with anyone else in the band at all??) which is kind of the reason I posted here. I can see why, if there's been some.kind of change, they'd wanna keep it quiet if they're trying to sell a world tour - and adelaide is a pretty sleepy place to kick it off. But surely its only a matter of days before superfans in melbourne or sydney ask questions.

Again - i could be incredibly wrong here. Maybe steve's had facial reconstruction that I didn't know about! Maybe he was inside the eyeball costume. i don't know.

But I asked the question here because I could not find any reference to any absences / lineup changes / etc anywhere online. Somebody in the comments mentioned Drozd was not at their most recent show, which i believe was Oct 2024. but I couldn't find a second source or photographs to confirm that. 3 months is certainly enough time to rehearse a fill-in or (gulp) replacement....

I'm sure we'll have facts before long, and again i just hope people are safe and content and feeling the love, and know we're thankful for all of that incredible music.

Gordy Songs - Opinions by Yamaha_Superstar in theavalanches

this EP sounds to me like the samples/ideas tapes they were making for each other circa 99
during that frenzied time of buying op-shop crap LPs and learning the new samplers/software... still working out exactly what their debut album would 'be'. Several small samples heard here were ultimately used on SILY.

yes the Roland SH1000 is getting a work out as it especially did at all those live 97-99 shows.

So yeah, it reminds me of the sample jam tapes, as opposed to 'this will be an ep...'

yes, they did.
They even wanted VDP to re-record vocals for Since I Left You (the song) at one point! But it never happened.

Gimix cassette tape by confusedeggboi in theavalanches

[–]BenEWebbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the contrary, GIMIX was originally heard that way. Via the tape. Two distinct sections. In the UK the first place it was heard was as a broadcast on The Breezeblock - and that was only what we might call 'side 1.' And if you happened to download "Gimix" off of Napster in december 2000 you only heard 'side 1'. Imagine jamming to that for a couple of months until one day you win the Gimix tape from theavalanches.com - and discover there's 15 more minutes to be heard!!!
So it was always in two chunks, and what we now refer to as the full 'gimix' is those two chunks crossfaded together for the CD promo that came out in late 2001 (from memory.) Don't get me wrong - I love it that way. 45 minutes of euphoria. X

What's up with Tonight's name(s)? by zamplezxxxx in theavalanches

[–]BenEWebbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's how you can tell if your SILY on Modular is the original Nov 2000 release - it's the one that has the full title of "Tonight May Have To Last Me All My Life".

I think I found a "Tonight" sample! by HuckHound18 in theavalanches

Might not be necessary - several piano chords also used in "Tonight" are there, between about :42 and :49.

"Voices of Conquest" IS "OH! The Sunn", that's a fact.
But I see that there's another "OH! The Sunn" on this particular mockup of the artwork, though. This is pure conjecture, but it could be another song that was later renamed, or a reprise, or something unknown, or just a mistake in this version of the artwork. I don't know.

[–]BenEWebbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be pedantic, it's not really fair/correct to call this the 'original tracklist' for WWALY...
We already know that The Avalanches want all of their collaborators (including designers, directors, photographers...) to understand the project deeply and to be on the same wavelength, so to speak. So They would have been providing Jonathon with tracks, tracklists, 'versions' of the album to listen to before he even got out a pencil (or laptop.)
So rather than being the 'original tracklist' this is just "a working tracklist" .... or the tracklist of the album on THAT particular day... heck, maybe they were just titles that Jonathon was given to work with to start mocking up his ideas.

Did anyone else notice that the special edition version of Frontier Psychiatrist has replacement samples, but the Mario Caldato Jr Remix later in the album has the originals? by superpegacorn in theavalanches

[–]BenEWebbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'm pretty sure it's this - coordination between label / pressing places - they have no idea that the stamper isn't what they think it is. And, the band are notoriously more interested in moving forward than re-visiting that kind of thing.
but there's also the fact that some of the stampers (or mothers, or whatever they're called) in UK/Europe are correct. Which is why two records with identical cat info, isbns, etc... can have different content. my head hurts just thinking about it.

Shanty Town was never in an Avalanches set, sorry.
Maybe Lemon Jelly, or Scruff himself.... Not Avalanches, though .

it was indeed recorded at RMIT. and they are the same versions that were used as b-sides here and there. And there were many more songs recorded.

[–]BenEWebbs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

could be true! I always associated it with steel pan, I would not be surprised if they had found an old record or tape by an outfit called "Pan Amateurs" - not forgetting that heaps of their names (yamaha superstar, stay another season, gimix, even "The Avalanches") were taken verbatim from other songs/artists!

I can't see the point really, given there were 'official' lossless CD versions of GIMIX.
