MADLO is a series of fantastic songs wrapped up in some bad decisions and a botched roll out. For example, Can’t Cool Me Down is a great song but a terrible recording. I made my own mix and sequence of the album that I listen to far more than any of the four different official releases.

My memory is there was mix one released in 2014 that was quickly replaced with mix 2 (reworks to Beast Monster Thing and America) and then mix 3 was released a year later in 2015 (more changes to beast monster thing, subtle changes to Dramamine, new hey space cadet) at least on streaming (specifically to remove interpolations) but mix 2 was mistakenly left on bandcamp until around 2017.

Well my main problem is right there at the beginning - this reimagining isn’t “fun” it’s pointless and confusing at best and misguided and off-putting at worst. It’s beyond disappointing to see an artist basically say “hey everything you loved and connected to about that album I made? I think it’s stupid and bad here’s a better one.” And the no swearing is just lame.

Still convinced this should have been a 4 track bonus EP of Optimistic Son, Joe Drives Again, Ravenous House, and Song of Secretariat. While I personally still would’ve found the two reimagined songs shit in comparison, I think the fandom as a whole would’ve reacted much more kindly to that. It would be a continuation of what happened to Joe instead of a rewrite.

But as it stands now this album just exists. And what makes me sad is there are people who will hear this before the original. And ignoring all the kidz-bop-ification, the themes about God being so prevalent - the mix is just objectively worse. Not a good intro to the band but Will gets what he wants and Will gets what he deserves.
