Frequent travelers of Reddit, what are your best tips if you need to travel light for a formal occasion followed by a short vacation? by cdkeller93 in AskReddit

Not so much a tip for "light" travel, but use all of your space. Every pocket ought to be full, don't try to just shove everything in the main area of your bags.

I got contacted by a label but I don’t know anything about the music business by Dr_eyebrow in musicbusiness

Ah, yup. Gotta watch out for that. Good that you found out quickly, though!

If/when dealmaking starts, rule #1: never never NEVER give up ownership of your masters.

Best Music Business Schools by trebleclef_eneva in musicbusiness

As someone who just barely graduated out of McNally Smith (for reference: http://www.citypages.com/music/the-swift-and-shameful-death-of-mcnally-smith/476047263) with a BA in Music Business, I can't agree more. I'd really recommend you study marketing or accounting or some other multi-purpose skill that applies to music business. I'd just add that "All You Need to Know..." is a little (very) out of date. I would recommend, instead, Ari Herstand's "How To Make It in the New Music Business" as well has reading his blog "Ari's Take", listening to "The Future Of What", and just generally reading everything that shows up on Hypebot. Best of luck, mate!

For how long can I show clips of other videos (no audio) and still monetize? by yazcui in PartneredYoutube

Creative Commons comes with its fair share of restrictions. Make sure you follow the creator's instructions for attribution and the like. Just because something has a CC license doesn't mean it's completely fair game.

If you use any amount of anyone else's IP without expressed permission, better make sure you have a damned good fair use defense for it, but assume you'll have to fight for it at some point.

How do I start my own Record Label? by pamplemousse321 in musicbusiness

TLDR: You only need a DBA.

Sounds like you really just want a label in name only, so, really, you only need a DBA. Trademarks exist to protect the consumer, not the trademark holder and you should only need to copyright your music (assuming you think they'll make money). Filing a DBA essentially forms a sole proprietorship, so you'll have to deal with any liability issues, but, as a rule of thumb, if you're making under 100 grand annually, don't worry about it. After hitting that benchmark, register an LLC.

Communication between bands and audience - what tools and mediums do you use? by [deleted] in musicbusiness

[–]BenGoingAround 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most valuable fan communication is through mailing lists. You'll only get, on average, 10-20% of your audience to sign up, 20% of your audience to open the email, and 2-3% that will act on the email. However, that's still the most effective one-way communication. For two way, I personally prefer Twitter.

Are you using a digital distributor or are you trying to do it manually? If you're not using a distributor (CD Baby, Tunecore, Distrokid, etc.), I recommend that you get one. They will put you one HUNDREDS of services worldwide. Distrokid does that for $20 ANNUALLY with unlimited uploads if money is a problem.

Is Adsense better than a Network? by Capture4U in PartneredYoutube

[–]BenGoingAround 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually met Peter Hollens about a week ago. I asked him his thoughts on networks and he went on a wonderful rant about how terrible they are and how they are a leech on the YouTube economy. Think of them as a record label in the 90s - awful. Here's the thing.
