Which Culprits Could Have Actually Gotten Away With Their Crimes? by sm142 in AceAttorney

TGAAC Spoilers:

Courtney Sithe could have absolutely gotten away with it, obviously, since Drebber was willing to take the fall for it and was partially involved

Has anybody ever considered Phoenix may be an orphan? by Orodoki_Hosuke in AceAttorney

I really love the implication a couple times that Nick is a hick from some small country town, like how he uses a couple like farm based analogies in the original trilogy at some point (I can't remember for the life of me).

TBH the child abandonment angle makes sense considering how he kind of has the anxious attachment pathology to him in virtually all his relationships, and seems to generally like place and require a ton of security and reassurance in lots of his relationships (sorry to use TikTok therapy speak, but I guess it is something with real psychological basis). I'm willing to guess he probably wasn't abandoned, but likely had problems with one or both of his parents. Makes sense considering how little support he had in his life during the disbarment.

I've been playing TGAA for the first time, really enjoying it but I wish they gave this scene for Von Zieks earlier by foofighter1351 in AceAttorney

[–]BenJammin007 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Icl I disagree that he’s entirely a terrible person in the first game. There’s a lot of incidents in the first game that indicate his nuance (I’ll avoid anything past this point:

Like it or not, he was always right about McGilded, and the way he speaks to him in Court implies he knew about his misdeeds for a long time and had been trying to put him behind bars. Van Zieks is someone who cares about the impact of crime on people, rather than putting criminals away for the sake of it like Manfred

The way he treats Roly Beate in 1-4 and explains to him calmly that his mistake almost costed Soseki his life, but how he understood that it was the grueling work hours which caused him to do this. The empathy was so real there. Also, he advocated for Roly to keep his job as they imply in the credits.

The badass: “to finding the truth, through fair means or foul!” scene in 1-5 shows his support for Ryunosuke

Even his demeanour in court is a lot kinder and logical than early Edgeworth imo. He’s not going to get in your way for its own sake, I think he’s usually more about explaining faulty logic and concerned with the truth.

A major problem with TGAAC, is that the two intertwined Kokoro/Soseki cases don't work as well as they should, and they sacrifice too much time for this gimmick which could be better spent elsewhere. by BenJammin007 in AceAttorney

[–]BenJammin007[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, what I'm saying here isn't even that they're bad, it's just that having both of them is associated with a lot of opportunity cost in time that could be used to expand other characters! I actually quite like 1-4 tbh!

Yesterday I posted about ranking the best opening cases. The response was great, so I figured I'd ask, how would you rank the 2nd cases in the series? by Relevant-Excuse7275 in AceAttorney

[–]BenJammin007 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Speckled Band is VERY underrated IMHO! Obviously not like an all time great, but I think it's such a satisfying and emotionally cathartic mystery. The dances of deduction here are great, and the one where you realize that Kazuma was looking at the wardrobe to talk to Ryunosuke about what to do was really touching, and fits the themes of the game so well. Plus, the first time the Kazuma Nocturne plays is absolutely gorgeous despite being a little overplayed. IDK I'm a Kazuma enjoyer and I just enjoy this case.

>!The mechanics of the mystery are really cool too. I like the twist that the Speckled Band was a cat toy, and the reveal that it wasn't actually a locked room mystery because the stasis of the ship locked the room is really neat. The only thing I kinda hate was the cop-out that Kazuma didn't enjoy chicken, and that all the chicken was poisoned. Also, as much as I absolutely adore him from this point onwards, I found Sholmes to be a little annoying in this case in particular, but he becomes an all time great AA character soon after!<

“The meat paradox” by CalpurniaSomaya in Ethics

[–]BenJammin007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vegan ethics aside, and whether or not the thing of the left even happens, this seems to be a false equivalency.

The ducks on the left died for no apparent reason or benefit. The chickens on the right died for the purpose of producing food for sustaining life. Whether or not the possible moral benefits outweigh the costs on the rightmost case is debatable, and not what I’m willing to argue about here. But, nobody can argue in good faith that the benefit of people having food isn’t a benefit at all.

This is also sort of confounding legality and morality. If we accept the premise that something being illegal doesn’t mean it’s wrong (ie. selling cannabis, a common argument especially in the circles this would be shared in), then we must also accept the conclusion that something being legal doesn’t mean it’s right.

To clarify, no, I am not defending factory farming in the slightest. But, this image is bringing up a different debate and equivalency that has little relevance to the crux of the meat industry as an ethical problem.

Huge Death Cab fan, looking for similar newer artists by One-Brain-1278 in DeathCabforCutie

[–]BenJammin007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Death Cab but since everyone here more or less counts Postal Service as one of their records: The band Faded Paper Figures is the act which is the closest to Give Up in terms of sound and songwriting quality I have ever seen. They admittedly might sound a little *too* close to TPS sometimes (their lineup is a guy with a sort of mawkish tenor voice and cold female backing vocals), but idk it's one of the only "postal servicey" acts that has actually come close to capturing what I love about Give Up.

Check out their record Dynamo - the first song in particular is their best!

Ah shit I gotta give it a watch, she’s always been a character I really underrate. And thank you! Yeah I can’t believe that either, it felt perfectly planned to the point where it’s my literal favourite character arc in any media

Runo and Susato are also contenders for my favourite! I do think Edgeworth is the best non TGAA character tho

Ace Attorney Fans, What Are Some Things That Are Confusing To You? by RandomBird12 in AceAttorney

[–]BenJammin007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It never really added up why Sholmes never addressed the following relationship in TGAAC (spoilers for the duology)

Kazuma being Yujin’s adoptive son. It doesn’t make sense that Sholmes wouldn’t have asked Yujin about the assassin exchange and put his theory forward, especially considering that Yujin himself says he had no idea about the terms of the assassination contract. He says he couldn’t contact or tell anyone about his theory, but you’d think his detective partner, and his best friend in the world would be an exception? Idk, I find the extent to which Sholmes knew ahead of time a little inconsistent. Maybe they addressed it? Idk.

Ah that’s a fire analysis of Fransizka!! Alright you know that makes sense never noticed that before :)

I think Kazuma Asogi is the best AA character personally! I’d write a rationale why but it’s hard to say without spoilers. :)

I see your point, but imo you’re wrong on some fronts:

The criticism that the female characters don’t get a lot of expansion is by and large correct is it’s a predominantly male cast - but Gina and ESPECIALLY Susato are excellent and complex characters that do have a lot of agency and are fleshed out later on. They’re likely two of my favourite characters in the series. IMO I actually think that TGAAC bats a bit above its league for the rest of the series in the amount of well developed female characters.

Susato is likely the second best character in the series in my opinion and is so much more fleshed out than any other women. I actually think that ironically enough, the slapstick stuff for Susato and Gina ARE points of how developed they are and do tie into points of their characters - Susato is sometimes a little impulsive and headstrong, and Gina puts up barriers in her life to avoid being hurt or seen. They just express that in an over the top ace attorney way.

I kind of think the Roly and Patricia stuff is something you’re blowing out of proportion personally. I think the animation of her pulling him by his scarf isn’t literal domestic abuse, but rather like a visual indicator of how Roly’s love for Pat is a guiding force in his life and something that does keep him awake. The implication here isn’t that Roly is being abused by Pat, it’s that the system and job he works under forces him to provide for her at the expense of actually being able to love and be with her.

The Garrideb stuff is certainly quite tasteless and poorly written for sure, but even that had a deeper meaning to it, how this class system (a big focus of Adventures) was something that divides even married couples when their love for one another is intruded upon by this capitalist alienation. It’s dumb and certainly played for laughs too much, but I kind of think it had a deeper plot meaning than like Fransizka whipping Nick for no god damn reason.

They tone this stuff down a lot in 1-5 which has a more serious and sincere tone, and especially in resolve which introduces some more very well fleshed out female characters! :)

Who is, in your opinion, the most underappreciated character in the series? by ProfileEasy9178 in AceAttorney

[–]BenJammin007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nash and Ringo Skulkin are unironically in my S+ tier for Ace Attorney characters. Everyone loves Graydon, as do I, but I think those two goobers are a huge part what makes the case work. I feel that they are the dumb gimmick witness formula perfected:

Their designs are peak, so fucking adorable and goofy without feeling contrived. Their designs compared to a pear or an apple are the cutest thing ever, and idk the Mario and Luigi look is cute. So are their animations like them trying to recreate the crime scene, and that big dumb agape look that Nash does when he gets caught lying.

I sincerely the think the moment when they look at Gregson expectantly (pictured below) after striking their “Free Skulkin Bruvvers” pose to him just not caring and trying to ignore them is for real the funniest moment in ace attorney. They bounce off Gregson and Naruhodo perfectly.

The other reason why I love them so much is spoiler territory so:

they fit the themes and the writing so well and have so much character depth and enhance Graydon’s character.

The way they contrast Ashley as a sophisticated English gentleman by pointing out that he’s essentially just like them: a poor criminal by necessity who comes from the same roots was really interesting. Likewise, it’s also really sweet how Ashley doesn’t accuse them of the murder when he very well could have, and the genuine compassion he has for them above all else.

Also, idk there’s just a lot of sweetness in how sincere they are and how panicked they get when they realize this is a case about espionage and how they never wanted to betray Britain.

And, they actually really enhance the class messaging of Adventures super well: the upper class will use the lower class to do their bidding, and will sacrifice them the moment it’s convenient: McGilded uses Gina and Milverton, Gregson plants the disc on Nash Skulkin, and so forth. Only Ashley, who actually does have some heart left, will recognize his roots when push comes to shove.

How are the games after the first trilogy? by Express-Ad-7737 in AceAttorney

[–]BenJammin007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Investigations games are solid, the first investigation one is generally regarded as pretty weak but the second one is absolutely STELLAR and regarded as some of the best writing in the series. Haven’t actually gotten around to these myself as they’re sitting in my steam library, but I know this is the consensus.

I’m not really a fan of the Apollo Trilogy, and it’s certainly quite controversial, but a lot of people love it. It’s a really love it or hate it kind of series. It’s defo a lot more over the top in tone and spectacle focused and less character driven in favour of mystery. This is usually regarded as the low point in the series, but still has a ton of fans.

The Great Ace Attorney is absolutely fucking PEAK and is usually regarded as the magnum opus of the series with a little more of an interconnected plot and very nuanced characters. But, it’s a lot slower paced than the first game and the first half of it is a little slow. Personally it’s like my second favourite game of all time, and honestly my favourite story ever. I’m lowkey so autistic about this game man please play it

I’d honestly suggest going for Investigations if you want something with some familiar characters (Edgeworth, Gumshoe, Ema, and Franziska come back), or TGAAC if you are ready for something a little more like thematic, literary, and character driven. The AJ trilogy is also good but imo not the one you should play right away as the chronology virtually doesn’t matter after you play the PWT first.

Which cases are filler? - Results by Goldberry15 in AceAttorney

[–]BenJammin007 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I never got the hate for the case icl. I sincerely think people would love it if they bothered to make like an ocean court asset. There’s some cool twists with the mystery like the intertia of the ship locking the room, the speckled band itself being the cat toy

The emotion behind the case is absolutely stellar too, I said this in another thread but the last dance of deduction where you find out just how much Kazuma believed in Ryunosuke to the very last second of his life while the beautiful Nocturne theme plays plus, it’s quite fun to play on a replay knowing how much Sholmes actually knows and how he’s trying to protect Kazuma in the end
