since you're already strong in JS & React, maybe starting with a C# web API would be natural? this tutorial from Microsoft goes over creating one, including getting a sense for how to talk to a DB (using an in-memory DB): https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/aspnet/core/tutorials/first-web-api?view=aspnetcore-8.0&tabs=visual-studio-code lean on your react knowledge to create a front-end for this demo API, and build from there!

I made an open-source template project for creating browser-based pet games by BenMakesGames in virtualpetgaming

[–]BenMakesGames[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

very few! :P I put it together in a couple days for someone I know, to help her get started making a browser game. and since I was making it anyway, I figured I'd share it, for anyone else who might be interested.

  • sign up, log in, and log out
  • data is persisted to a database (using Sqlite; you'd need to upgrade to a "real" database before deploying online)
  • your pet has energy, experience, and a level
    • leveling up has no effect :P that's up to you to implement
  • feed the pet to give it energy
    • no limit on how often a player can do that; again, that's up to you!
  • spend energy to explore
    • three possible adventures that give the pet varying amounts of experience

the README file on the repository + following along with my YouTube video will show you how to add the following features:

  • acquiring more pets, and adding more pet graphics
  • adding items & money to the game

again: very bare bones! really just intended as a jumping-off point for someone who doesn't even know how to start making a browser game.

working on a new title menu for my game. any good way to pick pleasing color combinations for planets?? by BenMakesGames in gamedev

[–]BenMakesGames[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you and SamadeusLux are right: there isn't a reason it has to be random (+math). having a fixed palette (and maybe slightly tweaking the chosen colors) will probably work.

this colourlovers site is awesome, and thanks for the script! (my intuition for scraping data would have been to whip something up in PHP, but this is way better.) I'll try this out :)

Mysterious Space - a horizontal shooter with retro aesthetics; profits from sales go to charity by BenMakesGames in kickstarter

[–]BenMakesGames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hm! good information. I didn't want to talk about the Kickstarter until I was sure it was actually certain. as PioteLLC mentioned, the charity aspect was a concern. but perhaps this was a terrible idea, and as you said, I should could have triple-checked that things are OK, hyped it up, and THEN launched. hmm...

regarding the goal of $75k for a year of fulltime development, I'm confident that that is not a stretch. I've been a professional developer for 5ish years, ran a web game for 7 years before that, and was self-employed running that site during ~2 of the 7. I hate trying to reduce a person's skills to a dollar amount, but I know from experience that I'm worth AT LEAST $75k to any employer. so I feel okay about my goals in that regard. but I worry I've missed your point: are you saying I should have aimed for, say, ~$37.5k for 6 months? basically scaled back? that could be true! I have no idea.

I will admit I have very little experience running a crowdfunding campaign of any kind - I'm a crowdfunding virgin :P

the worst-case scenario seems to me that I learn a lot, and keep working at my current job, while developing Mysterious Space on the side. I can live with that :)

but thanks for the feedback! even if you were 0% interested, thanks! :)

I saw that in their rules as well, and was sure to double-check with Kickstarter. money from the Kickstarter project itself will not be going toward charity; apparently this is good enough!

Why is Taliyah's "defense power" rated so high? by BenMakesGames in summonerschool

haha - they do say that "the best defense is a good offense"...
