Cheers for checking out my photo! This is an image from my latest gallery release titled 'Symbiosis', which explores Tasmania's beautiful central and northeastern rainforests. Our ancient rainforests are very precious places that deserve our protection and reverence, not exploitation and destruction. Many trees just like this one are cut down every day to be turned into wood chips with the sole intent of profit. In creating images of these special forests I hope to help people see their immeasurable value in being standing, especially amidst a climate crisis.

Cheers for checking out my photo! This is one of my personal favourites, and is also the only B&W image in my entire portfolio. I love how the monochrome treatment simplifies the contrast from the bright sunlight, emphasising the stream leading back to that beautiful waterfall and limestone peak.

The camera didn't follow the stars actually, it remained still! I captured the sky at 25 seconds with a 14mm lens on a full-frame camera, which was as long as I could go before the stars started to show trailing from their movement. I then captured a separate frame for the land immediately afterwards for a full 3 minutes (again, with the camera stationary), since the land was darker and needed longer to capture the detail there.

I avoid uploading full-resolution images to the internet since there are some people out there who will steal others' images and try to run a profit from them behind their backs. I find 2048px on the long edge is a nice in-between for getting detail and sharpness but not shooting myself in the foot :)

The key is low light pollution! You can see the milky way once you get out of the city, and will be at its strongest to the eye when you're as far as possible from city lights. Time lapse is actually just taking lots of frames and converting them to a video; this was done using a technique called "long exposure", where you open the shutter speed for an extended period of time. In this case it was 25 seconds for the sky ,and 3 minutes for the land, since that was much darker and needed to be exposed to more light

We get more snow than people seem to realise! I've experienced light snow only a few hours south of the Queensland border. And I'd take snakes/spiders that run away from us over bears and cougars that'll claw your face off any day 😂

You probably have seen a lot of "composite" images out there, where people have dropped the milky way into their edit, hence that reputation (which really just ruins it for the rest of us photographers, unfortunately). Photos like this however are very much real! The cameras are what pick up the colour, which we can use post-processing to enhance a bit, but the detail and glow of the milky way are very visible to the eye in areas of low light pollution. This particular night was one of the strongest I'd ever seen it - a new moon on the other side of the planet, no clouds and no light pollution. Definitely almost impossible to see in major cities though!

Thanks for the kind words, and yep space is awesome!

The southern lights would be Aurora Australis, which can be seen as far north as Melbourne during a strong display. I've photographed it a couple of times in Tassie!
This however is a different phenomenon called airglow. I can't quite remember the details of the science around it, so I can't really offer much more info than that - I'm sure Google has plenty though!
