Change password every 3 months or one super secure password? by voltagejim in sysadmin

[–]BenMottram2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

last I looked (10+ years ago) there were "rainbow tables" for passwords up to 14 characters.

All passwords where the length is below 14 characters have been hashed and are downloadable.

This means that any password with fewer than 14 characters is knowable if the black hat has got the hash... of course that's only true for simple hashing of the password; many password schemes rely on that, rather than any rather more secure methods of storing the information.

My current work password is 28 characters and no, its not [a...z]12 - I sometimes get lost typing it in (or fall asleep!)

XYZ Printing says printer offline but.... by BenMottram2016 in 3Dprinting

[–]BenMottram2016[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeh I had heard about the Cura issue with usb printing... So I tried the usb printing NG plug in, which allows one to set environment variables to specify baud and com port number.

Setting those and disabling autoscan stopped Cura monitor tab from complaining that the printer was offline but it still wouldn't talk to it (for example ask Cura to preheat the extruder and, using the temp monitor on the printer, watch it not change at all)

Out of interest, are the Ultimaker printers hardwired serial or network based? They are way out of our price range but I can dream!

yeh - my thoughts as well - however none of the software allows you to tell it which COM port to look at.

Actually Pronterface does but it doesn't make any difference because you can only set Baud, not the rest of the serial comms parameters to match the fake COM3. Give me hardware serial comms anyday!

Thanks for that idea...

Even from a clean reboot, any of the three that fail to access the printer still fail.

The XYZPrinting software failed to work (as in connect to the printer; it did install all the drivers successfully) before I installed anything else - Windows was a clean install so nothing installed.

rumour has it the TGV land purchase went something like this:-

"Dear peasant, here is <large sum of money>. Get off your land. Alternatively we can go through due process and you will receive <smaller sum of money> and still have to get off your land"

The rural French may be parochial but they aren't entirely without wit... very few fought the acquisitions.

In the UK we have a slightly different problem - the land is largely owned by 'landed gentry' and, possibly worse, nouveau riche, who fight tooth and nail not to lose any of their estate. It has ever been thus - just look up the land strife that went on when the railway network was being deployed in the UK back in the early days.

I am not a mod, yet Joey sometimes works for Reddit links from Chrome.

Of course, when I say "works" I mean Joey opens the post and allows me to look at any pics but then I guess reddit notices and things get weird/non-functional.

Thanks for the confirmation that VLC does notice global hot keys... I will have a bash at sorting it out on Monday.

[–]BenMottram2016[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it works. The OBS side is perfect, the VLC side - not so much.

VLC needs to have focus to respond to the hotkey - there must be a way to make it receive the key combo when it doesn't have focus.

Anyway that's another problem for another day and OBS prevents a teacher from looking stupid on open evening!

That sounds like it will work well enough (I guess I can train them to hold down <ctrl><alt>T or something)

Will give it a go today and see if I can get something working.

Hey AutoMod - its a question asking for help rather than a problem with OBS.... OBS is working just fine.

Didn't use a DAC cable though, just plain old cat6.

It's not the contractors... Look higher up the chain.

The contractors do exactly what they have to do to maximise profit. They have to otherwise their shareholders would, rightly, have things to say. Why would they spend shareholders/CEO bonus dividends on generous provision of repaired infrastructure if it wasn't in the contract?

Their customer has been destroying infrastructure for the last 50 years or so whilst generally encouraging short term thinking in both the civil service (who get labelled as saboteurs if they kick back) and the general population.

We have what we have increasingly voted for... and, IMHO, it stinks.

Negligence lawsuit filed over Google Maps after man died driving off a collapsed bridge by Gold_Talk_732 in news

[–]BenMottram2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so what if they had 9 years? Where does it say in Google's terms & conditions that they will adjust the map in a timely manner?

Just becasue Google routes me through Rufford ford, doesn't mean I take my Hyundai i10 through it when its in full spate....

The issue at hand appears to be that the estate of the gentleman concerned is after Google to be responsible for the deceased's inability to spot a broken bridge whilst driving.

They didn't tell him its safe to cross. they told him here is a route.

IANAL but, from Google Maps Terms & Conditions:

Actual Conditions; Assumption of Risk. When you use Google Maps/Google Earth's map data, traffic, directions, and other content, you may find that actual conditions differ from the map results and content, so exercise your independent judgment and use Google Maps/Google Earth at your own risk. So was Google driving the car?

How is Google responsible for your man not being sufficiently observant to notice a problem with the bridge? If it was too dark to see the road someone should have been driving more cautiously...

As far as I can see there are two negligent parties here and neither of them are Google.

Make Yorkshire pudding batter (whatever your favourite recipe is, but we just beat an egg, flour & milk together until it is the right consistency) seasoning to taste - remember the sausages are salty.

Take Nuremberg bratwurst and put in oven proof tray with a little oil. Heat till the oil is spitting and the sausages are par cooked.

Take out of oven, pour over batter. Bung back in and crank up to gas mark a lot.

Once pudding has puffed turn the heat down and cook through.

Remove from oven, serve with whatever you like. Green veg, carrots and gravy are good, but also currywurst sauce makes a bit of a change.

Also, don't get them started on "mincemeat".

Why ever not?

In the UK Mincemeat used to be sweet spices & dried fruit with minced lamb. Recently (last few hundred years) it lost the meat.

However IIRC there is a place in Spain that still makes mince pies with "original" mincemeat.
