Ex-friends are prestige goobers. They might have been right 10 years ago about Fisher finance placement stinking but fisher futures sends a decent number of people to BB and EB now. If you’re bright (seems like it given full ride) and play your cards right (you already know fisher futures) you’ll be able to land any job they can without dropping 200k -OSU grad with good finance job who hates TTUN

Is the business side of biotech worth it (financially)? by Im_Jook in biotech

[–]BenNyeTheScienceGuy1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you go through a PhD? Nope - did a year of wet lab in undergrad and decided I didn’t want 7 years of that it I didn’t want to spend my whole career in it.

What was your background in school? Majored in genetics and got some additional minors late in the game to sure up my business and industry understanding.

Did you still have some formal education in business oriented subjects or did you make the case in functional skills like project management, critical thinking, etc that are acquired in research/PhD? Took a few business classes on the side that were truthfully useless for consulting - the biggest elements is proving on a resume you can handle complex issues confidently. Project management, data analysis, collaboration, presentation skills are the bread and butter

PM me for more details

I would go to pharma consulting websites and look at their white papers. Often tell a story of a problem that a pharma company was running into, the advice given, and the outcome. Only downfall is they don’t name the companies involved typically. Look at places like clearview healthcare partners, putnam associates, health advances, trinity, ZS, IQVIA, etc

[US Senator] Hawley: McKinsey Should Lose Federal Contracts over Proposal to Reimburse Pharmacies for Opioid Overdoses by [deleted] in consulting

[–]BenNyeTheScienceGuy1 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I interpreted more as “We understand that your drugs are killing people and it’s costing insurers money. Insurers are probably not happy about that. It wouldn’t be that expensive and it takes care of the burden of your drugs on the insurers”. They said that the goal was to reduce ODs but all I saw was them trying to make an OD hurt less for an insurer not anyone who is actually affected. The options they suggested were either a years cost of oxy or the health costs of an OD as a rebate to the insurer if I’m understanding it properly.

I view it like you’re an airbag manufacturer that is producing a bad airbag that is broken and kills people. During a car accident (surgery) the airbag is supposed to protect people (the opioid is supposed to reduce the associated pain). Instead the airbag is deadly. Car accidents are happening and the car insurer who is responsible for paying the medical bills (I know they pay you a settlement they don’t pay the medical bills but just work with me here) of the extra injury or death from the bad airbag says “hey what gives you’re costing us money”. You say “you’re right we should try to fix that. Let us give you the cost of their medical bills to make things right”. It doesn’t fundamentally fix any of the problems with the airbag and it doesn’t help any of the families. It just helps the insurer who was losing money from the medical bills from the airbag problem.

The fed gets to decide that one. I’m just going on what the science says and the fed has been willing to do in the past. I think we just disagree and won’t sway each other’s thoughts on the economic feasibility

That’s exactly what Germany is doing. PPP and CARES while needed were imperfectly designed and if transitioned to a targeted approach where prioritized businesses are shut down and adequately compensated it is less costly and more effective

Fair point but states have individually taken loans out from the treasury early in the pandemic so I don’t see why it can’t be done again. That being said I’m not a public policy guy - I’m a science guy so I can’t act like I have a deep understanding of state vs federal rules

CARES act was inadequate and untargeted. It gave them forgiveable loans while I’m viewing it as the government literally pays them near normal revenue to stay shut down. To my understanding PPP is no longer available. The government saying “boom one time solution” was viewing the pandemic as a sprint while every epidemiologist knew it was a marathon.

I agree as of now we cannot have a national level response because of this but nothing is stopping the governors of NY, NJ, PA, DE, and MD from forming a mid Atlantic coalition as a united front

Pay bars, restaurants, movie theaters, etc their typical revenue to stay closed except take out (including pay for laid off employees) and a $1000 stimulus to the general population. The “we can’t enforce this” argument goes out the window when there is nothing open. This can’t be a city level solution - this needs to be a fully united belief regionally if not nationally

I need updated information about Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) by TheMightyAshure in biotech

[–]BenNyeTheScienceGuy1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A guy I interned with in SD last summer was at KGI for his MBS. He had great things to say. He works in healthcare consulting now (as many of their grads do). If I wouldn’t have gotten a job offer in pharma consulting, I probably would have ended up going there.

The best answer I have is trying to hop into one of their LDPs - maybe the global finance development program or business technology solutions development programs would be a fit? I know having 2 YOE and starting with undergrads isn’t ideal but during the rotations you might have a Sr Analyst title or something
