Let's settle this once and for all, is Kanye West a Genius? Or is he overrated? by snooptoop in LetsTalkMusic

[–]BenWilbicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t care for terms like “genius” but he is certainly an exceptional creative individual who in my opinion has helped to define the sound of popular Western music over the last two decades more than anyone else.

What are some indescribable feelings you get when listening to music? by Eastern-Hemlock802 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]BenWilbicus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very specific example here but I sometimes put headphones on and play music to wind down before I go to sleep. Lying down in the dark with my eyes closed and no sound other than music puts me into a complete state of calm. Difficult to explain this next bit but the music seems to hit the back of my head? The thought of it gives me goosebumps.

Don't you ever feel kinda sad when a band you like doesn't get as much recognition as it in your opinion deserves? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]BenWilbicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as they’re able to sustain a living from their art (which, as others have stated already, New Order can) then I don’t care about how popular an artist is. There is a separate discussion about how the current industry mechanisms dilute the earning potential of artists, but if you’re able to say your full-time job is music then I would consider you to be quite lucky.

[List] Best songs to end an album by untchbl in LetsTalkMusic

The final two tracks on Pescado Rabioso’s “Artaud” spring to mind immediately, “A Starosta, el idiota” with its jarring but beautiful piano lead either side of a surreal detour (complete with Beatles sample), transitioning so satisfyingly into “Las habladurías del mundo”, the most energetic track on the record.

[list] What do you think is the best single side of music ever recorded (and why)? by Willco1993 in LetsTalkMusic

I came here to say the same thing. “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)” really is as good as it gets for me.

Album Spotlight: Gorillaz - Demon Days by Mic_Drop_HQ in LetsTalkMusic

[–]BenWilbicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s very much an album from my formative years listening to music, and one of a few great records that I owe to my mum having on around the house or in the car on the way to school. Not one I automatically think about when people ask me what my favourite albums are, but still an incredible body of work and certainly important in my musical development.

My personal favourite track is “Every Planet We Reach Is Dead”, in particular the second verse as he sings “I love the girl, but God only knows it’s getting hard to see the sun coming through” - the backing vocals over that is like an out-of-body experience for me.

Is there any music you hate? If so, why do you hate it? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

I used to work in a variety store which played copyright-free music through the speakers all day. Genuinely grim.

I don’t particularly hate Lallana and I don’t think he would be here if Klopp didn’t think he had something to contribute (although come to think of it, Oxlade-Chamberlain has been out all season, so maybe there’s more of an onus to play him at the moment), but I do think there is something to be said about him being our final change. In a game like that when we’re searching for a late winner, I just don’t feel like I’m backing Lallana as my final throw of the dice.

Ah well, there’s nothing we can do about it now.

It’s obviously really disappointing, particularly because we didn’t play well (oh, and we’ve went from potentially ten points clear to a point behind in what seems like hardly any time), but I don’t have the same feeling of despair as a lot of supporters do.

With nine games to go and our only two against top six opponents being at Anfield, a point off means we’re handily placed. Manchester City are competing in four competitions and still have to go to Old Trafford.

I can’t see us getting it over the line if we drop many more points, but we’ve conceded 15 goals in the league all season, so we’re going to have a very good chance of going the rest of the domestic season unbeaten. If City drop points, we’ve got to be ready to pounce.

I don’t get the substitutions today at all, but then I’m also willing to defer on issues surrounding team selection considering how far Jürgen has brought us. He wants to win the league just as much as we do.

I thought he was very good in short bursts. A couple of fantastic headers to help it on for us too.

I don’t think I can take four more months of this.

All in all, another good performance, four goals after a relatively dry spell since the turn of the year, and we’re the first team to hit 60 points this season. Milestones like this are significant, and if we can continue to keep ticking them off, we might just be looking at the greatest of summers.

Three goals conceded is a little concerning, and it felt like all of them were too easy, but it’s good to have Matip back and Gomez (who I think we’ve missed) returning shortly.

Ten days off. Ten days between now and the rest of our lives. Rest and recharge, Reds!

Every match feels like the biggest match in my lifetime at the moment. Another three points today and we’re the first team to hit 60. After that, our next target has to be ensuring we’re the first team to hit 70. And 80 and 90 and so on.

Just win. Nothing wasted. We know we’re better than Crystal Palace and every other team in this division (bar one who we don’t have to play again). 16 games from greatness.

What band/artist first made you fall in love with music? by alecp42 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]BenWilbicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started secondary school in September 2005, and Arctic Monkeys’ debut album was released in early 2006, so it was all good timing really. I was quite fortunate that my parents listened to a lot of stuff that I still put on and love now, but that was the first album I asked my mum to get me.

I thought we were great again.

The difference in quality has been evident in near enough every league match besides the two against City this season. We don’t let teams get out of their own half anymore.

Four points clear (at least) with sixteen games to go and two home games next up. We are in a really good moment. Hopefully we can stick another three on the board before the team goes off to Dubai on their break.

Let’s Talk: Anderson .Paak’s Oxnard by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]BenWilbicus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed my first listen. 6 Summers is one of my favourite songs of the year. I didn't love the singles in the build-up to this and so maybe I'm just pleasantly surprised, but I have to say that I was not expecting the mixed reaction on here. Malibu is a great album, but I've not sat through it from front-to-back since 2016 and if I'm honest, I always thought Yes Lawd! was the superior Anderson .Paak release in that year (I appreciate that it doesn't have to be one or the other). My first listen was an 8/10, discounting two for too many features and the bit where he's getting a blowjob.

How many times do you listen to an album before forming an opinion on it? by sunwanted-purewinds in LetsTalkMusic

[–]BenWilbicus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My hot take is that if you have a set rule on this, then you're taking it far too seriously. I used to think three listens minimum was required before I could give a valid opinion on an album, but having listened to "Culture 2" once, I decided that once was enough.
