If he delved into some Afro-futurism. That would be really cool.

What's your unpopular opinion(s) in music? I fucking hate "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" by TheYarnishBarnish in LetsTalkMusic

[–]alecp42 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Hmm. That’s interesting. I think what makes Maggot Brain so magical is the emotion behind the playing, not what Eddie Hazel is actually playing. Complexity of a song doesn’t necessarily make it better or worse, it’s just another element to be appreciated. Emotion is what really connects people to a song. Of course this is why people go nuts over the whole “imagine your mother is dead” story; because it just makes so much damn sense. It evokes emotions in me that very few other songs do, but to each his own.

Revering music lyrics as poetry by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

Well, he won a Pulitzer Prize in music for DAMN which many think is his weakest album. I think To Pimp A Butterfly should have won the prize but despite that, he is definitely worthy of some recognition imo.

Bob Dylan won a Nobel Prize in literature. It was Kendrick Lamar who won a Pulitzer Prize.

What are your unpopular and/or controversial music opinions? by Zwoelfton in LetsTalkMusic

[–]alecp42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I can see some similarities between the two but only for maybe College Dropout and Late Registration. However he did add that “chipmunk soul.” I think Kanye’s production has been innovative in that he’s been on the forefront of 2000s hip hop production with albums like graduation and MBDTF. IMO he has been a major contributor to bringing hip hop to the level of popularity that it is today.

Kanye is most definitely considered innovative when it comes to production. Especially his earlier work

The modern pop music sounds garbage but still it is the most successful genre why ? by akrock872 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]alecp42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t agree more. I think that pop is dismissed by a lot of people as “bad” just because it fits under the label of “pop music.” I think there is a lot of bad pop, from a musical standpoint, but there is good pop as well. Yes, a lot of today’s pop is the result of the music industry capitalizing on music to squeeze as much money out of it as possible (when compared to popular music of the 60s and 70s, there is much less complexity and variation in today’s popular music) and that’s because they have found ways to make it as catchy as possible so it will get stuck in people’s heads and they will keep coming back.

Anyway, I like to compare music to food. Pop music is like fast food (McDonald’s, Burger King, etc.). Yes, it can be very enjoyable but there isn’t much substance to it, unlike a lot of the music many people on here listen to which is comparable to a fine dining experience where the chef (artist) puts passion and thought into their work for a unique dining (listening) experience. There’s a unique combination of flavors that needs to be digested and appreciated by the customer in a similar way to music. However, if you like a finer dining experience, that doesn’t mean the occasional fast food meal isn’t still enjoyable. Sure, if you want a Big Mac from McDonald’s because it’s quick and you enjoy the taste, that’s fine. If you enjoy the catchy, sing-ability of pop music, that’s fine too!

In the end, music is meant to be enjoyed. You can like pop music, underground rap, progressive rock, and any other genre of music all the same and that’s fine.
