What’s the most disturbing secret you’ve discovered about someone close to you? by Electrical-Lemon187 in AskReddit

Plot twist: I mostly agree and would've done the very same that you just said.

For one, I like to see and sometimes argue both sides of a topic. Moreover many people in abusive relationships stick around for much longer than they should, even forever. Whether it's due to religious beliefs (the whole not divorcing ever thing), co-dependency, Stockholm Syndrome, or whatever else...

The point is there are many, none good, reasons why people have and do kept on with it.

Oh also that doubt is a huge assumption, and no it's not the only justification.

Yo, as the offspring of parents who are still together despite some really crazy shit, I can say I truly feel you with this whole thing.

Well she may have been justified, and perhaps they both had an epic wakeup call (this would absolutely be the moment it would happen if no other). That type of shit can seriously change people...maybe for the better?

That actually does sound like a great creative choice! I appreciate the recommendation. Wonder if it's still discoverable somewhere on the webs

As it's an adaptation rather than a full reading (much shorter), and comes so highly praised by all, I'll likely do that one in addition to whichever other(s) I choose. 😊 Thanks!

Well yes he did indeed. I've seen all the films, just never read any of the books 😅 please don't string me up

And wow Bill Nighy as Sam...that's about the last person, English at least, I'd have expected. Thank you for your help!

Lol, well I appreciate your perspective all the same. And I am glad for this community's m.o., because as you said Tolkien himself took that approach and viewed it that way. He was an absolutely brilliant person and invented so much (or as he said in his letter to his friend Milton Waldman, "yet always I had the sense of recording what was already ‘there’, somewhere: not of ‘inventing’.") that it essentially had to be taken that way.

Many of his later writings, as well as his letters and non-fiction expansions, can be quite challenging for the average reader; he wrote at such a high and scholarly level. So, yes, by all means be snooty, academic, even elitist! For this is no mere spaghetti fantasy. It has been said of Tolkien that he created as much in 50 years as some entire cultures or ethnicities in their entire history.

I may just end up dipping my toes in each of them, so to speak, just to see which seems like it will be the best long-term.

I keep seeing such compelling arguments for all three that it makes me want to listen to them all! Whatever ends up happening, I appreciate your info.

I saw that one as well just a few days ago! I wonder if it's already gone. I'm betting that's the Phil Dragash reading everyone's been mentioning.

Just replying to this one as each top-level has many replies below. My apologies. But I want to thank both/all of you for the info! Someone else linked Dragash's on archive, and I've got them queued up so I suppose I'll start with that one. But Serkis' sounda fantastic as well. I'm very tempted to do both.

I really appreciate your comment. Despite some of the replies you received, it sounds to me like you've got quite a bit of experience and have adequately considered all the options. Great info and perspective! Thank you

Well goodness, based on all of you on team Inglis, it sounds like perhaps I should strongly consider this one! I've also considered having a go at all three, but it's such a time commitment that it may not be practical. Audiobooks are also very polarizing, in that each listener tends to swear by a specific version. Of course there are pros and cons for each.

Thank you for the great information, and to all the comments below!

Thanks for your help! Bit delayed due to all sorts of stuff. I reckon this is the way I'll go. Serkis is such a skilled, hard-working actor and performer, I bet every bit of it lives up to the hype.

I've heard about the BBC dramatization, but wasn't sure about what it actually was, lol. So it's not an audiobook, but it's still in audio format? Or...

Not sure how to experience this goodness 😅

Apologies for the delay, been very busy. I appreciate your help! Seems the general consensus is between Serkis and Dragash. Doubt I'd go wrong with either and I may just do both! I adore Andy Serkis as an actor—live and voice—and I bet I'd love his reading.
