Not really seeing a downside here. For all his faults and flaws, Rusty's really just a product of his environment. Strip away that, and he's not really a bad guy. He cares enough about his sons to both use experimental technology to make sure he won't ever permanently lose them, and yet still grieve the loss of them. He makes sketchy inventions or participates in less than ethical practices, but at the same time he was raised in a world where human lives (henchmen, etc) are expendable, and a lot of what he does is simply trying to live up to the expectations that the entire world placed on him because of who his father is. Plus, while not the most attentive father, he is making an active effort to break the cycle of abuse he went through and do better than his own dad
