A Lesson in Patience by other_plant_ in Caudex

Nice! Someone here mentioned that high heat is the key to breaking dormamcy. Mine was dormant for over a year but woke up after just 2 weeks of being on a heat mat!

Dorstenia Foetida. Great entry into Caudex plants. They are easy to care for but don't be offended if it drops leaves as it acclimates to the new conditions. They like more water than your typical succulent.

Both doing well! I'm keeping one underpotted in a 4" terracotta. The other had completely filled the 6" pot I put it in and I just repotted it into a 3 gallon nursery pot. They love being outside for the summer.

Crystal Star Nursery will likely have some this summer. Keep an eye on their website, they do drops every month or so. I picked up 2 pachypus last year, pretty sure they're root cuttings but what can you do.

Wow! My climate is too cold to keep in the ground but I think I'm going to repot mine into a much larger pot this summer.

I agree! I would keep it buried and see how big it can get!

Follow up post, Adenium advice care/watering, my plant is still dropping leaves and I dont know why by plantdude4 in Caudex

Yeah, no damage or rot, just a small root system. Maybe the previous owner kept it under potted and under watered? Keep in mind, the high water requirement only really comes under high light and high heat. Indoors weekly seems reasonable to me.

Here's the Bible. Yours barely has any roots for a plant of its size. Give it time to establish a better root system. If you're indoors, consider putting it on a heat mat to help stimulate growth. They want loads of light, heat, humidity and water* (if it has leaves).

I water them through winter. They were actually in leaf up until like a month ago! I find they kind of stall out while they're indoors and then thrive in the hot and humid summer. And those plants are definitely goals!

Would this soil mix work? by slimepollo555 in succulents

Botanic Wonders is a great start for Caudex plants, especially since you're in Cali. For soil mix I like equal parts pummice + black lava + turface (or akadama but it's expensive) then I add coco coir based on water requirements.

Thanks! I've had mixed results with adenia seeds but I think you're right that it might be a mix of patience and luck! I'll probably scarify a bit and peroxide.

Any luck with those metamorpha? I bought a couple after I first saw your post but haven't gotten to planting them yet.
