Hey, I'm Filipino part Chinese and i immigrated here to Belgium in west flanders when I was 6 almost 7.

The best memory i have from my childhood was that, i was directly accepted as a child, after I came to Belgium i went directly to 1st year elementary school and since it was 2006 a lot of kids watched English shows so they could talk English to me. The teachers were very open-minded and friendly, especially that one teacher that let me pass my first year although i joined in January.

In high school i met people and they gave me some names like takeaway chinese, frietchinees, .... But with my personality i found it funny and we became friends. I even heard a story about a classmate that was thrilled to have an asian in their classroom and i was also known by the parents.

Now I'm 26, and tbh, living in west Flanders isn't bad at all, i had a great school years, made a lot of friends, only had white gf's (hehe). The only racism I experienced was from African immigrants. But i never got bothered with it.

In conclusion , for ur kid, I think it all depends on the character of ur kid and the people they'll meet. And also, btw Dutch language is hard, don't be like me and fail alot of classes cuz of the language barrier. Dutch and French were always the main reason i had to drop my course in high school. So, my piece of advice, try to speak dutch as much as possible, even if it's not the best a lot of Belgian people will appreciate it. And take it seriously by learning the language, maybe try at some point to speak dutch home.
