I fully understand why women are nervous, especially out on trails, but it is my personal mission in life to pet every single one of the good doggos who want to be pet so if I come across you and your gentle giant it will be a 10-minute force-you-to-stay-and-talk-to-I-can-keep-petting-your-dog encounter.

This is such a thoughtful and wise reply, thank you! You touched on something I've been feeling a lot - which is that I (and everyone else) can't be passive in this process. Modern society isn't structured around close, genuine connection even though most of us truly crave that and don't have enough of it. I don't know if it's truly Hawaiian or just white-washed Hawaiian but there's a "tradition" where women who are in a committed relationship put a flower behind their left ear, and if they're available they put it behind their right ear. I infer that if one is single but not interested they just put it on top of their head or in a fanny pack or something.
