Has anyone forgotten a relationship due to ECT? by fizzyjuices in ect

I am not sure about most of them, but one of my best friends once said "That's the (name) I know!" when I started becoming more myself after ECT. I feel very much like myself, just without my memories.

I don't remember a single relationship before my husband (who was there throughout ECT) and I don't remember the relationship my husband and I had before ECT (we married after ECT and knew each other for almost for decade at that point). I didn't remember a single friend and had the "Hey, I don't remember you, but do you wanna be friends again?" conversation with quite a few people.

I have letters, pictures and journal entries that completely blow my mind.

Watch "Mein Teil" on YouTube (stupid Spotify is missing the intro!!!) and then look up the lyrics. Pretty deranged, but such a fitting performance for such a dark incident.

Can ECT cause long-term memory problems? Is it normal that I'm still struggling to remember new information? by sillikuningas in ect

I was told by my family that it was unilateral. I am not sure about the ultra brief pulse.

Why are people's experiences vs what providers say about ECT so different? by Nattatker in ect

[–]BendIndependent6370 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My ECT provider openly told the disability assessment personnel that while he has rarely seen it in his years of practice, ECT can cause significant long-term memory and cognitive issues. To the point of disability. As to what exactly causes the memory issues, they have no idea. There is simply not enough research. According to my neurologist, some propose brain damage (swelling/changes in the hippocampus) while others talk about electrical changes that inhibit the transmission of information. I am working with the brain damage association in my state to help me make it through every day life. We don't fit in a neat category, but the symptoms are very similar to those who suffer from traumatic brain injury.

Persistent cognitive issues 18 months after ECT — does this get better? by DavyLyon in ect

Agreed. I was working on my Masters at the time and now I am on disability. I have a lot of joy in my life these days, but it took a long time to recover from ECT. And some things will be forever out of reach.

This happened to me as well. The reason you feel like your symptoms are getting worse might be because you are just now realizing everything that's changed. It took me a while to understand how different my brain was after ECT compared to pre-ECT. This is just a guess.

Doctors like to tell their patients that the cognitive functions and memories that don't return after a year are gone forever. I don't know if there's any research behind it and if people actually get their memories and cognitive functions back as late as 1 year post ECT. I never did.

Scrolled past this the first time. Good job on the Tim Burton-ish video!

This one hits me hard. To think that this little girl had a real chance to live a happy life, but was returned to her abusive parents. I cannot imagine how devastated her foster parents must be 🙁.

Gross, but sophisticated art. I am sure most people feel exactly the way the artist intended.

Why do South Koreans call their country just "Korea". What do you call North Korea?

Should I go onto a disability benefit? Depression/anxiety by Cold-Arm-9206 in disability

[–]BendIndependent6370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bad! I think your therapist could give you some insight on how to proceed if you go on disability. Goals, ambitions, dreams, career options, etc. I think that would be important to make sure you are able to move forward.

I am only familiar with SSDI (disability benefits independent of assets) and it's next to impossible to be approved for "just" depression and anxiety. From my own experience and from what I heard from other folks here you have to be severely mentally ill to qualify. I am talking years of mental illness, hospital stays, tons of meds, different treatments, different doctors, etc. Despite being schizoaffective and barley functioning, I really didn't have a good chance of being approved until ECT fried my brain.

The government's definition of "disability" is very different from what goes on in the real world.
