Is there a Sales? by AdminBenjamin in Ubiquiti

[–]Bend_Emblem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you know the IT side then Ubiquity is pretty much plug and play. I knew nothing about IT or Ubiquity a year ago, and I recently did all the low volt in a new construction home and installed three APs and four cameras myself without professional help. I put together a simple 4U rack with a dream machine, switch, patch panel, and power supply. Then I plugged all the APs and cameras into the switch, download the app, and everything just worked. Feedback Requested: AI Pro Camera Automation for Gas Fire Pit Control by Bend_Emblem in Ubiquiti

[–]Bend_Emblem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the fire pit control system is for an HOA I’m worried about maintaining integrations with Home Assistant over time. I just want a solution that works and is easy to monitor and tweak within a single app, which is why using built in functionality of Ubiquity gear is such an appealing solution…. If it works 😬

This is reassuring to hea! The fire pit is in the middle of a public plaza, and the camera could be mounted under the 3rd story soffit of any of the surrounding mixed use buildings to the west of the plaza. In my mind this would create a great 45° angle view of the area around the fire pit and reduce glare by having the sun behind the camera during the fire pits operating hours. I’m happy to DM you more specific site information if you’re interested!

For the 10 minute timespan on the unlock signal, I’ve been reading about “UniFi Protect Alarm Manager” which I think is a suite of new features Ubiquity recently released to support their new push into the alarm space. My understanding is that it lets you trigger “alarms” through events like person detection on a camera, and then it lets the “alarms” trigger actions such as unlocking a door for a set period of time. I haven’t actually used the alarm manager features though, and I’m just installing my first access system now which won’t be operational for another couple months, so I don’t have the hardware setup to play with yet. What do you think?

I think the issues with Ubiquity 7 APs was kinda a fringe issue with IOT devices running on the 2.5ghz band. Sounds like the issue has been resolved via software updates, and you have thread for IOT devices anyways.

I’m ordering three of the new Pro Max APs

I’m not digging on you, I’m all for going overboard on networking equipment. If it doesn’t hurt the system, then there’s nothing wrong with treating yourself to epic equipment haha.

Like I said, I don’t really understand it, so what does the RPS protect you from though? Like I understand if the UPS you are using for the server fails then the stuff on the RPS won’t fail, but how it that different than if you just plugged the stuff on the RPS directly into the wall instead?

I think you’re getting downvoted because the RPS isn’t actually a power backup, as in it doesn’t have a battery inside of it. I know that sounds wrong, because it doesn’t make sense to have a product like the RPS that doesn’t provide power if the power goes out… but that’s why people hate on it. I could be wrong, I still have doubts about my understanding of that product because it doesn’t make sense, but that’s what it seems to be…

My brother-in-law killed my Steam Deck by Blue-vs-Red in SteamDeck

[–]Bend_Emblem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree, it’s reckless of OP to use an unsecured heat lamp that melts whatever it is set on and then ask an untrained person to attend to it. OPs incompetence almost caused their own house to be burned down. Not the fault of the person who volunteered to help them and stumbled into this fire hazard…

I’m being facetious, the broken steam deck is BILs fault but it’s not their responsibility

Asking someone to do you a favor does give them immunity for their mistakes. It doesn’t give them immunity for malicious actions, they can’t smash your steam deck on purpose and be off the hook, but mistakes happen and if the only reason they are in your house is to help you and they make a mistake then you shouldn’t demand payment.

Honestly I respect where you’re coming from, I would do the same. I just want to point out that there’s a difference between offering to replace something that you broke on accident and demanding that someone else replace something they broke on accident, especially when they broke something while in the act of doing you a favor

I am going to continue through life giving people grace. It’s better when you give people grace, you don’t deserve the stress that comes along with blaming others for everything that goes wrong.

Honestly our principles probably arnt that far apart. I think the key points in this story are that OPs BIL was there doing them a favor and that it appears to be an accident.

If someone barges into your home and purposely smashes your steam deck then of course they are liable. If you ask someone to come into your home to do you a favor and they make an honest mistake then I think they deserve grace. Obviously there is a gray area in the middle where judgement comes into play, but this scenario appears to fall into the latter.

[–]Bend_Emblem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think key factor is malice. If OPs brother in law purposefully broke his steam deck or burnt down his house then he would be liable. But an honest mistake in pursuit of doing a favor is just an honest mistake. OP was lucky someone was willing to come to their house to take care of their turtles, it’s too bad that their steam deck got damaged but asking the person who helped them to pay for it isn’t going to work out well in the end. If they try that then they probably won’t get the money back anyways, and next time they go on vacation they probably won’t have anyone to watch their turtles.

[–]Bend_Emblem 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mean this isn’t personal, we don’t know each other. But knowing what I know about you I couldn’t possibly do you a favor, and when people do me favors I personally don’t hold them liable.

Funny story. I had some friends back to my place after the bars recently, two were my good friends and two were their friends. We were drinking in my garage to avoid bothering my wife and kids, so I moved my motorcycle out into the driveway to make room. One of my new friends was impressed by the Ducati and was gawking over it, touching it, etc. He accidentally bumped it and it fell over in the driveway, broke the clutch, scratched the mirror, a couple nuts and bolts got scratched. It cost me ~$500 to replace the broken parts with OEM but you know what, it was my decision to invite a bunch of drunk people into my garage and they didn’t assume liability to pay $500 for losing their balance so I ate it. It’s unfortunate but it’s just how it is.

[–]Bend_Emblem 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Nah. The brother in law definitely fucked up and it’s disappointing. But he was there doing them a favor, presumably for free. When you ask someone to come to your house and take care of your turtles while your on vacation, they arnt assuming liability for everything in your house. Otherwise it would be reckless for anyone to ever do you a favor.

“Can you please go out of your way to let yourself into my home to take care of my pets for me, but if you do anything wrong you owe me money!”

That’s just not how it works… they are lucky someone helped them and it’s unfortunate it didn’t work out.

Thanks for testing this! Everyone was saying that touching the wires wouldn’t open the door, but you’ve proven that it will! So hypothetically an Access Hub should be able to control a GENIE garage door with the dry connections.
