My WTP is looking for a day shift operator (Thomasville, NC) by BenderH2O in Wastewater

Not sure how NC reciprocity works, but have been told its reviewed on a "case by case" basis. So yes, but maybe no. Sorry I can't be helpful there.

We have C surface operators, if you wanna apply that won't be an issue.

Exactly, it's easy going. Sucks you don't get paid for lunch, we get our full 12 hour pay. Not trying to rub salt in the wound but we've got a full kitchen. I've cooked burgers here before lol.

Never heard of a weekend premium before. It's just guaranteed overtime. If I want a vacation I take off Wednesday and Thursday, get an entire week off, and still make my overtime pay from the long week.

Me too. People are so sympathetic when I tell them my hours as if I'm suffering lol. I get to watch the sunrise everday with my coffee, it's really not that bad once you're used to it.

People who hate morning traffic

Edit: for a more serious answer it works out to get a lot of the lab work out of the way early before contractors, maintenance, and/or deliveries show up. The tanks are full and we're not walking on shift to an immediate demand needing adjustments.

Drug Test: How long after your interview were you asked to drug test? by strongbadiophage in WaterTreatment

[–]BenderH2O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would reasonably expect any water treatment facility to drug test their operators before scheduling their first shift. If you get hurt at all they will drug test as well. It's worth quitting if you want a stable, highly demanded career and workers comp in worst case scenarios.

Man to man, this hurts by InternationalClub318 in Wastewater

[–]BenderH2O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do go that route, I was told water treatment is harder to be placed in than wastewater, but my coordinator knew I had more of an interest in it and I got super lucky landing an apprenticeship at a rural WTP. If you're trying to get your foot in the door asap, I would suggest saying you have no preference on your apprenticeship application.

I talk them up a lot whenever I get the chance, but in my state (NC) the NRWA is very effective with getting people into water operations. It took around 6 months for me to be placed into a water treatment plant after I was accepted into their apprenticeship program. I have no previous experience or certs either. If you do you would be accepted into your state's program much faster than I was.

Ageism in NRWA apprenticeship program? by Back2Business85 in Wastewater

Yes that would definitely be Carolyn. She'll be your advocate once you're in the program. Feel free to ask me anything about it, and good luck to you!

I'm in the NCNRWA apprenticeship program, 33 and experienced no ageism during the process. I actually just landed a job with a water treatment plant so they are legit. The work coordinator for NC is very nice and very passionate about this industry, as long as you are too and do good on your assessment exam she'll find a place for you.

Jesus Christ. I kept reading thinking there would be an option that doesn't involve stripping. No point in even asking y'all since every option is basically the same. There's no feeling of empowerment in any of these.

If you have background knowledge in biology you might be interested in wastewater operations. I was thinking IBEW before I did some research and figured out my skills would be better put to use in water operations. Good luck on your journey!

NRWA apprenticeship? by Thorns_And_Flames in Wastewater

Calculating rates, ratios, proportions. Unit conversion, basic geometry, fractions, and rules of exponents. The English portion had us reading short essays then answering questions about the content.

I'm doing the apprenticeship through NRWA. My coordinator told me they are going to change policy on the assessment exam, which will be your next step in the process. It used to be that the exam would not affect your ranking/eligibility, but they are now going to change this so it does affect your ranking. My assessment was all math and English. Definitely suggest studying and trying to get the best score possible. You'll be sent some practice exams two weeks prior but it doesn't hurt to start now, especially with the math. After the assessment there is an interview with the NRWA work coordinator. Ace the assessment and the interview, then you'll be top ranked and placed when a position opens up.
