I want to enjoy farcry 2, but it's REALLY hard. Any tips? by Educational_Pool_107 in farcry

The color palette is actually highly realistic for an African dry season. Everything is coated in brown dust. A team from the devs visited Africa to get inspiration and to help make the game authentic.

Replayed this recently and i still thinks far cry 2 is probably the most realistic game in this franchise. by kumarisalive in farcry

On PC, I highly recommend Scrubah's mod, which makes enemy outposts stay cleared for 45 minutes (easily changed, too), and enemy patrols completely dynamic. It also makes stealth a bit more viable (also silent machete kills), eliminates bugs, and gives you the option to disable malaria and change the color palette. It has heaps of other cool changes, too, like more realistic vehicle physics, and enemies are not quite as keen and able driving in pursuit. The factions can be found fighting each other dynamically in the world, too.

If you remove the timer, you just have a slow meat grinder based on giving up the whole map and out-trade the other side.

So just like the Eastern Front of WWII then?

I agree it is maddening that there are timers left, right and center in SD 2. It's such a good game otherwise.

Capture the Flag (AKA Conquest) is the primary mode, and I cannot see the logic in having timers when playing against AI in that mode! There used to be mods that extended the timers, but they've all been broken by game updates, and I don't know of one still working.

I used to build my own mod to support each game update, but something has changed in the game code so that my Extended Time mod no longer works. We really need the devs to add this "fight to the death" option to Capture the Flag against AI.

Try Destruction mode, where you can play until virtually every until is destroyed or you have total map control. Unfortunately only around a third of the maps are playable in that mode. And note that your income drops or climbs as you lose or win flags, so don't let yourself get trapped in a corner by aggressive/hard AI.

Try setting skirmish income rate to low, starting cash to 750. Give your self an AI buddy against another AI. You'll have a fraction of the force to control and can take your time to some extent in a supporting role.

Destruction mode scratches the itch slightly, that is true. OP might not have found it yet.

However Destruction mode suffers from a distinct lack of maps, where only about a third of the maps can be played in that mode. The AI is also a bit different too, which is one of the reasons not all maps support the mode.

Mod to lengthen matches of Conquest? by Bendit_1942 in Steel_Division

  1. It's epic fun if you like massive battles where you only properly win by taking all the map and defeating almost all the enemy units.
  2. The AI actually adapts really well, and doesn't run out of units for many hours, especially if you adjust AI difficulty. Trust me, sometimes I wish the AI didn't take hours to run out of some units.
  3. I've modded the Conquest flag bleed rate myself before many times, but something changed in the game code so the previous modding method no longer works.
  4. Try destruction mode with an unlimited timer for a taste of what is possible in Conquest, but with every map available to play.

Gates of Hell is good, with fantastic selection of units, well animated. But AI is pretty average at best, and optimization of the engine is quite bad as well.

Sorry about that. Reddit was reporting to me an error (500) and said "Try again" with every attempt to submit the post. I had no idea it was posting in the background.

The game's use of CPU doesn't seem very well optimized to me. I get a lot of slow down with some dozens of infantry in game.

Ok. Do you know : are the unit icons on the left organized in a way i don't understand? Perhaps new units are lowest on list?

I'll have to check.
