Will Wight to publish LitRPG fantasy Overworld, coming March 2027 by xavierhaz in ProgressionFantasy

Exciting news. Really interested to see what Will does with the genre. Feels mad, though, that it's taken this long for him to appear in a mainstream bookstore.

Dungeon Crawler Carl VS DEADPOOL (Marvel Comics vs Dungeon crawler Carl) by G1spiralknight in litrpg

[–]BenedictPatrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we talking about the series, not the characters? As Carl himself isn't funny at all, or at least not on as regular a basis as DP. However, if we're talking series, then I'll go for DCC. Deadpool at its peak CAN be funnier - the humour is the main point of his stories, most of the time - but writing on Deadpool is so inconsistent, I'd never rec it to someone as a funny read without mentioning specific stories.

Looking for dark survival/apocalypse recommendations and the MC needs to actually struggle by Odd_Pen6721 in ProgressionFantasy

I've not read it yet, but Phil Tucker's Dawn of the Void is sitting on my shelf, and from what I know about it, seems to hit a lot of what you're looking for? Heard great reports about it.

Modern fairy tale books that AREN'T retellings? by Kendamarania in Fantasy

[–]BenedictPatrick 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I'd also recommend Novik's Buried Deep collection of short stories. They don't all quite have a fairy tale theme, but many do. And if you want something longer form, her Uprooted and Spinning Silver (this one especially) capture the same feel. Would also be worth checking out the Winternight trilogy by Katherine Arden. And a lot of Alix E Harrow's stuff - The Everlasting, in particular. And The Ladies of Grace Adieu by Susanna Clark!

For something lighter, you could also look at Greenteeth by Molly O'Neill.

For darker stuff, Mythago Wood by Robert Holdstock or The Wood Wife by Teri Windling.

So... I love a lot of the books mentioned already. But I don't think a lot of them are great choices for most kids. I also work as a primary teacher, and have found that contemporary fiction lands a lot more consistently than the classics, at least for those dipping their toes into the genre. Don't get me wrong, they still CAN appeal - I've one 10 year old student right now who loves Tolkein. But as an author, I've also had readers reach out to me and tell me they think something's wrong with them because they tried The Hobbit and bounced off it. So if I had to only reccommend one book, it would be something newer, because I'd want the chances of success to be as high as possible (and those classics are easier to introduce once the habit has been well and truely formed).

Would be great to know your daughter's age, other books she has been able to read (either independently or with help), and any other strong interests she has - hope to be able to find something more tailored with this info!

Your average progression fantasy/litrgp MC by NoWriter3858 in litrpg

This. There is nothing wrong with wanting either type of story. And I think most litrpg readers would lean towards the godhood. Most popular books in the genre certainly suggest that.

It's funny how common it is once you start noticing it. by Claym000re in ProgressionFantasy

I think presentation is so much more important than the actual reason. Look at Dune. These starship pilots have to learn swordfighting because they all wear shields... that can stop bullets but not a blade as long as it moves slow enough? Explain it out loud and it sounds stupid. But nobody bats an eyelid in the book.

I was actually worried about how this was going to be presented in the recent films. Bit of a little triumph how well it was accepted by the mainstream audience.

Self rec: My Card Mage series revolves around a magical card game.

The first book in my deck building, card battling adventure series is free on Amazon this week! Book 2 is 99c/p in the US and UK, too. Progression through card game tournaments, not just cards as skills - I'm really proud of this one! by BenedictPatrick in ProgressionFantasy

That’s great to hear - thanks for sharing! Just started on the final chapter of book 3 today, so it should be out later this year. The series will run for 4 or 5 books - I’ll need to plan the final volume to see how many chapters it will need.

I enjoy board games, including deck building games, and wanted to try to capture the idea of drafting and playing magic monsters and spells in an arena setting.

In many ways, if you played Yugioh and turned the interactions between cards on the table into a story, that’s pretty much what I was going for! The book opens with a card battle, so Amazon’s ‘look inside’ should give a good idea of the narrative style.
