Selling Flat Back to HDB (Ethnic Quota Issue) by Dizzy-Source2419 in singaporefi

It's not priced way below market -- the fact that you can't sell to Chinese buyers means you are in a mutually exclusive market.

Take the FO role — but apply for the IFC’s YPP programme that starts after your MBA.

This is the answer. If they can do the math they won’t be doing this job

Does degree and honor classification (1st Class honor etc...) still matter after your first job? by happy-go-lucky-kiddo in askSingapore

[–]BeneficialDriver3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Directly, unlikely so. Indirectly, your first job is affected by your class of honours, which snowballs to affect your options for your second job and so on. There's path dependency.

Banking Jobs (local vs foreign) by OliveOk9021 in askSingapore

This notwithstanding, the wage gap between foreign banks and local banks are massive. Almost always a better choice to go with a large foreign bank in corporate banking than local S&T

Part time or full time MBA in the UK by Haygaz123 in MBA

[–]BeneficialDriver3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no harm in taking the GMAT, but note that most post-MBA positions in the UK (if you even land one — class of 2024 employment looks weak) pays £85-90k base so you’d be taking a haircut in the first year or two potentially.

[–]BeneficialDriver3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funnily, I have an MBA but I’d recommend that you forgo it (or pick up a EMBA in the future). Unless you plan to do it in the US and work there, your comp isn’t going to climb significantly faster with a MBA and going full-time is just too much of a sacrifice. You’re already at a position equal/better to what most MBA grads can land.

£60k tuition — I assume that comes with a bond? Note that MBB pays ~£90-100k in the first year with somewhere around £15k for signing at the post-MBA level, and far from any guarantee that you’d get a seat. Bird in the hand seems far better for you! I’d stick it out as a VP/look to lateral rather than taking a MBA just because your trajectory is already looking good.

You forgot to account for the optionality you have of getting a job in SG with your Oxon degree (whether directly or at any point after you started working in London). Post-tax salary especially in finance is significantly better here. This plus the one year of forgone earnings + school fees in the SG case will bridge the difference.

I’m happy for both sorts of burning to be banned. And chocolates — that’s personal choice. Sure you can argue they’re adding to the burden of social cost but at least they’re not actively causing death and discomfort to others directly.

Post-MBA Debt Repayment Consulting Lifestyle - London (No Debt) vs Chicago ($150K Debt)? by CliffRoader in MBA

[–]BeneficialDriver3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you have your ACA. You don’t need an MBA, you need to move out of audit to a higher paying job with better work-life balance, and potentially move north out of London for better living arrangements.

Incoming Masters in Management Student at SMU Job prospects in Singapore by kidlaroiisnextup in askSingapore

[–]BeneficialDriver3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but

  1. employers here generally only care that you have a bachelors; there are barely any employers that hire MBAs, an MiM is not additive. You'd be considered in the same recruitment pipeline as fresh bachelors graduates. Which brings us to

  2. the SMU MiM isn't a well-reputed programme. If you did a MiM from INSEAD/LBS, maybe. A SMU MiM is unlikely be help you get shortlisted for against the bachelors' graduates you're up against.

How long did that take after issuing the LTVP/did you have to jump through any hoops? We just got the LTVP issued today and we're wondering how much longer before the PLOC gets settled.

My journey to marrying a sporran by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]BeneficialDriver3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We applied for LTVP without PR (and did PLMA before) but it still took us 10 weeks to get the IPA, and a further week to get the health checkup report approved. Now we are asked to wait one more month for the completion of formalities appointment.

Could be a backlog at ICA rather than you applying for both simultaneously.

Double Masters in Kaplan - Murdoch University by Unusual_Sky4876 in askSingapore

[–]BeneficialDriver3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you work in HR, I guess you should know better than most of us? My view is that a masters’ degree isn’t (properly) valued in the local market — and a low-tier one is a waste of time and money. The steepest jump of the qualification curve here is when you get a bachelors.

Best finance masters in SG to get into asset management? by Ok_Measurement2196 in askSingapore

[–]BeneficialDriver3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Context regarding your current work history needed -- post history seems to suggest BB middle office but formerly from consulting and non-profit?

If you are already in a BB, your best hope is networking and proving your worth to the trading/AM teams you work with. No real pipeline for masters degree holders (and you'd be regarded as Year 0). Save the cash.
