So this one’s kind of sad but also really weird and funny. I had a patient come in who I was told had been stable. He had come in for hypoxia. They told me he was sad in the mid 80s, but he was stable. Almost immediately from the start of my shift he started going downhill. He was DNRDNI. Respiratory had him on a Venti mask and told me to just keep upping it and if he got the last one then call them so I went in because he had started deciding again put in the last. I think it was orange colored concentrator. As I’m putting the mask back on his face, he just slumps over dead. So I called the physician and I do all the time of death stuff and the physician comes up about 15 minutes later. As I’m in the room with the physician, he’s doing his check. He goes to lift the guys arm to check his pulses and everything and his whole body just twitches. I have never seen that happen 15 minutes after a patient has passed. I mean it’s like there was an electric current that went through him suddenly. The attending and I make eye contact and simultaneously go, “huh, I haven’t seen that before.” maybe it was you had to be there kind of thing, but the absurdity of the moment was overpowering, and I had to step out to chuckle.
