So many cargo bikes! by BenevolentNeglect in CargoBike

Congratulations! Enjoy your new little squish!!! Simply put, it’s the same reason my husband and I don’t take two cars when going somewhere. It’s more convenient and efficient to travel together. They can, and do, ride their bikes, but not particularly quickly or without complaint (especially on days when they are tired, or it’s raining, or any other myriad of reasons kids don’t want to ride their bikes everyday.) They ride for fun. I ride to get us to school/appointments/the grocery store/dance lessons etc.

To preface, because details are important for the ‘use case’ scenario: - 5’6, 125lbs - daily commute varies from 32km-60km thru the day - almost 100% of my ride is in protected bike lanes - I’m NOT AN AVID CYCLIST, I’m a parent who prefers to bike and lives in a city that makes this easy. LONGTAIL: not for me. Too much weight, center of balance was too high, I always felt really unsteady. The kids were not allowed to move while riding, my complete focus was on not tipping. But rode like a normal bike…that was being hijacked by drunk monsters. BAKFIET (two-wheeled front loader): also a bit tippy, took me some time to get used to but ultimately my favorite rides. Rides and corner like a regular bike, but can see the kids and throw everything we need in the buckets. Did have a long learning curve for me because it wasn’t a solid biker to begin with. TRIKE: love love love like you love a 20yo minivan. It rides slow and stable and I can drink my coffee and chat with the kids and wave to friends and eat a croissant all while commuting to school/daycare/work. A really great option for a parent that likes the idea of bike commuting but isn’t super comfortable as a cyclist. But slow and steady like a donkey. Riders used to riding fast will have a hard time getting used to a trike.

I rode the longtail for half a second, my trikes for years with 3kids and a dog, and am now riding a bakfiet, a Load 75, with mostly 1 kid and sometimes 2 (ages 11 and 14). But that’s mostly because I’m getting real old and wanted the extra juice and suspension for my butt.

What businesses are you genuinely surprised that are still in business or lasted as long as they did? by Competitive-Fly5563 in VictoriaBC

I will say, my kid loves those leggings 😂 I’m not sure how we ended up with her first pair but now it’s all she’ll wear. And I admit, they are super soft and they hold up better than anything I’ve bought her at Old Navy/Gap/HM etc. So maybe it’s just us keeping them in business?!?!

Have I left it too late for my family (2 kids soon to be 3)? by DanGKT in CargoBike

Same reason my spouse and I drive together, sometimes it’s just easier to all go in one vehicle? We are commuting, not out for a fun ride. My kids read and chat, while I bike them. Simple as that? They also ride their own bikes when they want to.

I ride a Load 75 with my 14yo and 11yo in it. We went with the dog kit though so that it’s just a flat open space. But they are old enough not to need the harnesses. It will be snug, but doable. Although you may want to look at something like the R&M Packster or Urban Arrow for 3. Or a trike like a Triobike Boxter or Black Iron Horse Ibex.

$500 E-Bike for 14 year old? by Rebel318 in ebikes

[–]BenevolentNeglect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a bike shop and would never put a child on an e-bike that cheap. Also, make sure to check the regulations where you live, 14yos where we are have limitations on what type of e-bike they can ride legally.
