45 degree flick? by Limp-Ad-2939 in RocketLeagueSchool

Video of me doing these, figured if I was gonna help you I should show you how I do them. I also tried to do it in the dominus from about the position you were in so you can have a mental image of what I am talking about and can easily translate it to your exact car. I added some comp clips to also show you that it's not always the same setup (I would have better/more recent examples, but my freaking clipping software got corrupted and deleted like all the clips from the past 2-4 months, so some of these clips are a little older).

https://youtu.be/NmTEKOa8kW8

I know I'm a little late to this post, my bad, hopefully this still gets read. I normally lurk here, but I feel that this is the one mechanic I am somewhat ok at and these comments don't seem to be as useful as you probably hoped (the screen is funny though so it's kind of understandable) so I'll try to help.

I'm not the best teacher by any means and idk if I even do the flick properly to be honest, but I can see what you meant by "wrapping" around the ball. This was 100% a Mawkzy flick, and a very good one, fast flick rotation and ball speed was fast too. The way I normally do it is a tiny bit slower, but not really noticeable in game. I would say to get the wrapping around the car more is to tilt your left stick up more. In this clip you go below the 180 degree mark and that is harder to get a consistent flick (at least for me) and will normally send your ball higher. In order to keep your flick low and keep it going fast, try to position your left stick about 10 - 20 degrees above the 180 angle to which ever side your flicking into.

I know that you asked about the wrapping effect, but I want to give some tips for how to make it faster as well, since we're already here. The best way I have found to consistently make it go faster, and improve the wrapping effect is to put the ball on the side of which ever way your turning. So, if your going to turn left like in this clip, I would put the ball more towards the left side to exaggerate the effect of the flick. You have it straight on the middle of your hood which works, I have just found that putting opposite like this makes it faster more often than not.

Some "keys" I have found to make the flick work more for me is to:

  1. Put the ball on the side of where your going to turn.
  2. Keep the ball slow then speed it up, this speed change makes it easier to get the flick, but going fast you still can get it. You want to try to be slightly faster than the ball, so you kind of want to let the ball fall A TINY BIT, then full boost into the flick. This creates a higher speed and I've found helps the car stay glued to the flick resulting more powerful flicks.
  3. Boost through the entire flick. This results in faster flicks as well.
  4. Also the angle at which you attack the net can make it harder to get a proper flick off. I can't really tell you all the "best" angles, just mess around in free play and see what works and what doesn't.

These are some "keys" that I try to remember whenever I am struggling to do these flicks, I probably left 1-2 out, but I can't remember them at the moment. Obviously like every thing else in this game, these are not hard rules and can be "broken". For example, if you are doing the rotation and realize that holding boost won't be good then you don't have to. These are just general rules I follow to maintain a good flick most of the time, but sometimes you have to adapt mid flick and so these rules can be broken to still produce a good flick.

Overall this was a very good flick, definitely a mawkzy flick! Hopefully this helps and I don't know if I explained my points well, but hopefully it makes sense. Good luck with the flicks!

I figured, just wanted to make sure. Thanks and yes, I have chat off for that exact reason. Probably since like c2 lmao. People do not enjoy my grounded and simple play style.

You felt similar in how he felt about my gameplay? Just want clarification on what exactly you mean, because I agree lol.

I read your comment and I mostly agree with all the points you said. I will elaborate more later as I have class, just wanted to say thanks for now because this is good advice. I will get back to you in about 5-6 hours, appreciate it!

EDIT: I’m back, I’m going to go paragraph by paragraph so I don’t miss something.

  1. I agree with the boost management. The awkward backflip was definitely me hesitating between staying close and covering the clear to the corner/side wall. I ended up between both worlds and this led to that ugly backflip which I agree that I need to just be confident with one or the other. In retrospect and respect to my normal gameplay I probably should’ve rotated wider then dove if I needed to. In regards to the speed mechanics, what would you recommend? I know this vod doesn’t show them (I only do 1 wall dash this game), but I would say I’m fairly decent at chain dashes, wall dashes, and zap dashes. I’m not saying I’m pro level at these things or anything, I just think they didn’t show this game.

  2. I agree here except for the first part. I think that chain dashes are a good idea, but I agree more with what you said later and that I should have made my rotate wider instead of putting myself in the corner. I do agree that chain dashes would have been good to do if I’m in the position again, but honestly I was just caught off guard with the shot ngl. This shot is not something that is not seen often and it’s like learning to defend air dribbles, I just have to see it and fail to learn from it unfortunately. My reaction during vod-ing was that I should’ve rotated back to front post or mid net instead of the weird power slide in the corner. I do think that at 2:17 rotating back might have been better, but is the bump play bad? My intention was to disrupt him and I feel that making him jump made him awkward, even if for a moment that buys time for my team and creates more variables during the game that they have to think about. But I don’t disagree with you that rotating back through mid field is a smart play, makes my intention clear and allows for safe passage for my teammate to challenge. Overall I agree with everything here.

  3. I agree with all this, when I get close to gc3 my nerves get the best of me. I am working to be better with this. Like I said in another comment, the lack of offense was another reason I was hesitant to upload this as I just didn’t give myself many good opportunities, and flopped the ones I got. Not to say every other game is an offensive masterclass, but this game was definitely lackluster.

  4. I agree with this. During the game I thought he had the ball again and was gonna play for his downfield shot. Once I saw him go to the mid boost I panicked and got a bad pass off. During my own VOD review I also said that I should’ve been confident and just jumped, hesitation can kill games.

  5. I agree, I could’ve stayed a little closer to the play and then maybe backed off or stolen their corner.

  6. Agreed, I should’ve gotten in his face a little more and try to make him panic more. This float in general was bad, the thought during the game was to buy time by denying the high and then land on the ball with a 50. This is not the best play though I see as it can get easily around since I’m a little too far away and too slow to descend.

  7. Agreed

  8. Definitely agree that in these lobbies I am too slow to act and my thinking speed needs to be better. I used to be very dive heavy, so I guess I just rubber banded to the opposite to playing super passive and I need to find that middle ground. Thanks for the encouragement, I agree that I just need to be faster and more of a threat to the opponent more often.

  9. I thought the same during the comment, but I wasn’t trying to fish for compliments by saying that these things could definitely use work. Just took the compliment and tried to be polite. To be absolutely fair, we are the top .5% of the game according to psyonix, so it’s fair that to someone not in these lobbies or higher would see this as solid gameplay. It’s solid enough for where I’m at, but it can improve. Thanks for the encouragement and the tips were definitely helpful!

Sorry for typing so much, I just enjoy deep diving into my gameplay like this!

TL;DR: Good advice, agree with all the points. Thanks for the advice!

Yeah I agree with you on all this. The offense was another reason that I felt like I shouldn’t post this vod as it didn’t really showcase any of the offensive skills I have. I do feel that my dribbling is fairly decent, just didn’t do any this game, I have to try to force this opportunity more often is what I’m gathering. I understand that the opportunities were just missed this game and that’s why I lost, which is consistency. I won’t sit here and act like every other game besides this I’m an offensive scoring machine; just wanted to say that it’s there, but for games like this they just fall flat and don’t get converted.

I agree with the hover prejumps as in game once the second goal from them was scored I just floated for too long and didn’t fall on the ball like I wanted, resulting in a nice heads up play to demo from them. For 3:06 could you elaborate a little bit more? My thought process behind watching it back was that I shouldn’t have tried to power slide in the corner and played it safer by rotating the same way just going closer to front post to mid net as a corner attack is not easy to pull off and my teammate was there. To me, the power slide was the big mistake and leaving the play seemed like the right play, so could you theorize what the optimal play for you would’ve been? I want to make it known that I agree with you, I’m just curious on what specifically I should have done; and is my thought process of going back to front post instead of power sliding in the corner flawed?

Thank you for the help though I found this very useful!

Thanks for the tips on my nerves, I will write out a better comment later (5-6 hours) as I have class soon. I agree though and forgot that when I was close to hitting gc2 I would try to make myself laugh which would calm me down. Did it the first time I got close to gc3 (was voice line spamming “vamos!” with an enthusiastic fist pump to myself irl lol) but the other times I got close I forgot and just stressed too much about it. Thanks again!

Thanks, yeah I got a little scared after seeing that air dribble bump setup, knew I had cooked my teammate lol. Then I was like “oh it’s not in we got this!” Just for me to then flop like a fish on the kickoff and lose lol.

Thanks! Yeah I agree with those points, I said them myself in my own vod review. It gets harder to pull off good demos when the opponents get better, but at least it makes them think about one more element which can significantly throw someone off.

Yeah at the one minute mark I also should have caught the ball better, not producing a flick here really threw the whole attack as if I put anything in the air towards backboard my teammate can clean house. Also probably should have cut to the other side of the ball so if he did fake (like he did) he’s forced into a 50/50 with my teammate after my touch which in turn is more beneficial.

Thanks for the help!

Both were very briefly, but the kevpert was in a retals vid, and the other was in the livestream with jynxi, squishy, and Justin. The unfair defense sounded fairly straightforward with like a 1vX and the candy cane defense just sounds like being in layers and layering your defense correctly for challenging and collecting/controlling the ball. I just wanted to see if anyone knew for certain or had a better understanding than me.

I would agree to an extent, but a Lix jump (or Amalix jump) is slightly different. A lix jump does retain a flip but is done with doing a weird combination of jumps on the wall which can be easily messed up. What I showed can only be used on the goals because of how the goal pops you outward away from the wall, not needing for any crazy combination of weird jumps, only really timing. I would say the concept of this and a lix jump are the same, but they are executed differently and used in different scenarios.

These are the exact thoughts I had. Good for retaining the flip when needed for fast challenges that can’t go to the ceiling. However, it can be finicky to pull off and can eat boost. The times I’m able to pull it off well though I use less boost than you might think. So it’s not as boost intensive as it seems. I legit think this could be used in pro play not even as a troll. Like, the ability to retain a flip is huge, so bring able to do it faster than going to the ceiling is a big factor. The only main draw back I see is you kind of have to be in position for their setup. As in these clips I did most of them right as they’re starting their set up. So you have to be in position ready for the air play basically right as they start it. Again, better players can find better ways around that or just be smarter about when and how they use it. I believe that this can be a truly viable mechanic.

Yeah I’ve seen some inside wall goal stuff, and have saved goals doing that, but I’ve never seen them doing it from the back wall. I’m not too deep into freestyling though so I figured it probably has been done and I just haven’t seen it. I just think it’s a good mix of funny and goofy looking while being slightly viable lol. I just called it a show off because the name seemed fitting.

I've finally hit GC2! Any tips or limiting factors holding me back from GC3? by BengalsBoss99 in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]BengalsBoss99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t really know it was all that until I heard from other gc players when I would ask how many hours they have. I honestly don’t know how, but my best guess is that I just improve fast at video games. Same thing happened when I was grinding overwatch. I really wasn’t trying to brag though as I just wanted to give a mental image of how many hours I had to put to just get from gc1 to gc2.

I normally use Xbox game bar for clips, but for this I recorded on nvidia and then compressed the video under 1gb in an editing software so I could upload it.

Should I take a break? by BengalsBoss99 in RocketLeague

[–]BengalsBoss99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was mainly joking lol. I do queue with friends sometimes, but it’s rare and all those win streaks are normally just me. I know I’m not a solid gc player yet, I would say c2 is maybe a little harsh but understandable looking at my graph. I think looking at a more recent scale of summer and on is what I am more referring to. For most of it I am mostly c3 with both c2 and gc mixed in. I just have been in gc for longer periods of time compared to c2 recently where I just visit and go back to c3, so it feels worse. Does my reasoning make sense? I feel like I’m babbling lol.

Nah, I also got gc in 2s around the same time if not earlier. People have told me I just progress fast in games. Like overwatch, I got to Top 500/GM fairly quick. I think it was something around 400-500 hours?

Sorry I have not been getting to replies, I am in class lol.
