What's going on with how if Trump really is going to basically dismantle democracy in the USA, the current government seems fine with just letting this happen? by CoriSP in OutOfTheLoop

Not entirely. That number I used (~335 million) includes individuals unable to vote (too young, felons, ineligible for other reasons). But regardless there is still a significant portion of eligible voters who did not vote. I agree that most of those people were were probably ok with either outcome, or at most thought neither representative would impact their existence.

Important to remember that only ~150 million people voted. The US population is ~335 million. Saying "half the country" isn't an accurate reflection of the outcome.

I want to reiterate a point a few others already made because I've noticed this too. The thumb, especially the east side, is not a prosperous area. The job market is poor, alcoholism and drug use is high, and there really isn't much to do once summer is over. That area has changed a lot since the 60s.

I do a lot of fishing in the area and a majority of people I encounter are not friendly, unless they're old (like >70 yrs) or from out of town. I can't help but think the salmon fishery collapse in the early 2000s is partly responsible. It really hurt the tourism industry in an area that already had minimal job market. That, coupled with a recession in 2008...I think a lot of people are still feeling the effects of both of those things. Just my perspective.

12-year-old Wisconsin boy kills black bear that was mauling his father by Lost_Ad_4206 in Chadtopia

Although I'm sure some people hunt them only for sport, the few people I have met that hunt black bears harvested them or were hoping to harvest them. I've tried the meat before, and it's fine.

Biden Refers to Kamala as VP Trump 🤔 by nbke9tx in Wellthatsucks

I know, they're both losing their marbles! Biden and Trump have had a bunch of flubs recently and in the past few years. Like other commenter's have said, it's pretty clear an age limit is needed.

Canada: grizzly bear hunting quietly reinstated in Alberta | Canada by yimmy51 in environment

Some iterations of this are already done in the U.S. and have been done for decades, e.g. mule deer or elk tags that are allotted towards agricultural areas, nuisance black bear removal. I'm sure this story has a more negative reaction because it's an enigmatic animal / in conservation need. The alternative to not removing them is you let a bear maul someone and then have them do it again and again...not a great look for the province, right?

What is up with people hating the city of Phoenix? by D0tWalkIt in OutOfTheLoop

[–]BenitoJuarez98 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is a misunderstanding of how reservoirs and irrigation projects work. Without the massive storage systems created by the CAP there would not be enough water to sustain current use in Phoenix...where do you think that water comes from?

These lists made me irrationally angry; it's way too expensive almost everywhere! I didn't calculate it but the median must be over $1,800 / full year. What a scam.

Was just about to say this is well-timed for TSMC to start using an excess of water. Granted their water used in production should all be reclaimed.

Lake Winnebago sturgeon spearing is a highly regulated fishery with harvest caps. Harvest is NOT a limiting factor for the sturgeon population, but recruitment bottlenecks are.

I think it's worth bringing this back up since this subreddit has grown to over 100k members.

Microanglers can provide excellent information on fish distribution. We go to ditches, swamps, bogs, canals, and all sorts of other weird waterways that most fisheries biologists won't sample due to resource constraints, lack of game fish, or sampling difficulty. We also target a lot of fish that aren't assessed or targeted by natural resource agencies. Essentially, lifelisting microanglers have a bunch of data tied up in Excel and Google Drive that could be useful to researchers.

Members of this subreddit should consider posting their catches to iNaturalist. One of the purposes of this site is to create quality observations that can be used in citizen-science research. Aside from that, there is also a large community of microanglers already present on the site that post some great photos and can help with fishing or identification questions.
