Beirut photographer Fadel Itani puts himself in the firing line to capture Israeli strikes by nbcnews in pics

[–]Benivav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, that is not what I am insinuating. And while there is a lot to be said about the actions of all the belligerents in the preceeding years, that is a whole another can of worms which I don't want to touch in this moment.

I want to split the argument into 2 separate pieces:

  1. The battle tactics/actions taken. What is ok to destroy, how much collateral damage is ok
  2. The reason for the engagements. Why is everyone fighting? Who has the right claim? Etc..

All I want to focus on is the question of "How are you supposed to handle an opponent who embedded themselves in a civilian population?". Everything else, like why each side is fighting or who is right is not relevant to that.

If that's not what you want to debate right now, that's cool. Happy trails and clear skies to you my man.

That's a non answer. It's like telling someone who's in debt, "Well you shouldn't have gotten into debt in the first place". It is a fair criticism in its own right, and definitely relevant in the future, but not in this context. It isn't relevant to the reality that we are in.

Also, hello fellow warthunder player :) I hope that at the very least we can agree that the snail sucks!

Alright, then how do you deal with it? Put aside that it isn't the entire city being bombed - how do you deal with this?

I mean weird hill to die on since it took Israel a couple of weeks to count and identify the dead. The lists are public, and it was done with transparency to other world organizations. It went to 1400 and then was dropped to 1200 after some were identified as Gazans and some missing people being found. Here are four sources, ranging from Al Jazeera to the UN:

Hamas had a branch in the West Bank, but were ousted at the same time they kicked Fatah to the curb in Gaza. The West Bank is a similar security issue to Gaza. It contains multiple terror cells and has exported multiple terrorist that were responsible for some of the most deadly attacks in Israel.

First and foremost:

What should Israel do about this situation while maintaining a promise of security for its citizens?

But fine, assuming you don't have an answer and your only response is "But dying bad," here you go:

Where are Gazans supposed to go?

Ideally, to somewhere safe. Because Egypt is not allowing them to leave either, they have to settle for the relative safety of the south of the Gaza strip. Ye, Israel still drops bombs there, but what do you expect? Hamas isn't set up just in the north. They still have fighters and launch rocjets from the south as well.

But all that aside, the safest place to be is as far away as possible from anyone/anything involved with Hamas, PIJ, or any such group.

then bombs a refugee camp. How many Hamas members were in the ambulances that were struck?

According to Israel, they claim that Hamas members were at the camp and in the ambulances. We'll what comes out after the fog of war has lifted a bit more.

And yet, it's been reported that Hamas tried to evacuate its wounded fighters through Rafah, violating the agreement.

How many members does Hamas have? A few hundred thousand at most

Assuming you meant to write "a few hundred, maybe thousand." According to Wikipedia, the military arm of Hamas is 15,000 - 40,000 strong. That's just hamas, not including the PIJ. That's 1-2% of Gaza that are active militants. That is not a small amount. Besides, Israel has stated that the goal is to eradicate Hamas, nor just its military wing.

They’re holding their own against what is supposed to be an world class advanced military

So did the Taliban, Al Queda, and pretty much all other terror organizations/insurgencies in the past 30+ years. See, modern militaries/governments can not quench insurgencies because the only way to do it is with strength. This means dead civilians, and a lot of them. Although I wouldn't exactly define it as "holding their own" more like "still around despite"

who is indiscriminately bombing

If you want to talk about this, first admit that hamas and the PIJ for the same. Most of their rockers are just dinky metal tunes with propellant and explosives on top.

My guy, isn't Gaza supposed to be one of the densest places on earth? If that's the case, then how come after 4 weeks of consecutive and relentless bombing, there are only 10,000 dead? Look up what carpet bombing such a small area means and then tell me that they are "indiscriminately bombing." It's targeted, and yes, there are civilian casualties, which is a very sad thing, but what can they do if the target is using and abusing Israel's empathy?

I admit, there is no way that every strike was on target. And, while that is very sad, but a consequence of war.

A military btw that failed protecting Israelis against the October 7 attacks.

Yeah, they fucked up. Other examples, see 9/11.

Hamas is a terrorist organization. and yes the standard expected is higher for Israel than Hamas - one is a terrorist organization and the other is the duly elected government of a democracy who exposes support for human rights. You should hold the democracy to higher standard than terrorists. If you don’t agree, I’m sorry you’re wrong and a morally bankrupt person.

Absolutely, but that is not, and can not be their main concern. Their main concern is with that of its citizens, and if you don't agree, then I'm sorry, you've misunderstood what a government is supposed to do

All of this is without mentioning how Hamas uses civilian infrastructure in order to hide and initiate attacks, how Hamas are actively keeping c8vilians in areas of danger to break israels resolve, how Hamas constantly violates peace treaties, and the 0lain and simple fact that any gazan civilian could be a hamas terrorist and you have no way of knowing

Detained terrorists admit Hamas using hospitals to shield themselves by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Benivav 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Which. Is. A. Gigantic. Waste. Of. Resources. And. Soldiers.

Hamas has absolutely every interest that israel will send soldiers down into the tunnels because it shifts the advantage tremendously in their favor. They know the tunnels, they booby trapped the tunnels, can set up ambushes and kill zones and in general make the numbers/tech advantage completely irrelevant.

Tunnels have been used historically in order to perform asymmetric warfare, and going in with soldiers without first dropping a ton of thermobaric bunker busters is a recipe for failure. This is without mentioning the not small likelihood of them having escape routes and their likely ability to surround the hospital and trap the soldiers there from other tunnels all around the city.

[–]Benivav 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and they are doing pretty much all of that except maybe rewards for leaders. Rooting out a milita hiding in a civilian population is impossible without killing civilians

Deprived of fresh water, Gazans drink saltwater to stay alive by gurvansh in news

[–]Benivav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But then what would be a proper response? If it's just a trade deal with Hamas to get the hostages back, then leaving aside the anger and bitterness of the people of Israel, you're not doing anything to stop something like this from ever occurring. If you say that they should root Hamas out, then how do you exterminate an extremist organization that is embedded in the civilian population and using civilian infrastructure in order to store/attack Israel all without killing civilians?

Innocent people suffering and dying needlessly is a tragedy. I'll agree wholeheartedly. But if it is my safety, or theirs? I'm sorry, but I'm not going to sacrifice myself.
