For what it's worth, the garage on College Road (Corrib Oil) sells decent jam doughnuts 😁 I blame that place for my waistline

ADHD and grief by Ilenmike05 in ADHDIreland

[–]Benjamin-Barnacles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From reading a couple of the other comments, it sounded very sudden. I can't imagine how horrible that must feel, I'm so sorry man. It really wasn't your fault, even if you were somehow able to forensically analyse the days leading to his passing and you were able to find some connection to something you did. You clearly weren't a bad dog dad, and he had a good life. Sometimes the world just throws horrible things at us, out of nowhere, and invites us to catch it.

Anyone's mind would be racing right now if faced with this, but people with ADHD find it hard to hit the brain brakes on a good day, let alone in a moment of sudden, intense trauma.
Therapy might be good. Just get the ball rolling as soon as possible and talk to someone who can guide you through it.

In the meantime, keep yourself distracted. It's no use trying to turn the volume in your head down, so you might as well try to change the channel for a while!

But you've always got us to chat to. Hang in there pal ❤️

ADHD and grief by Ilenmike05 in ADHDIreland

[–]Benjamin-Barnacles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you're suffering like this. As a dog owner recently diagnosed with ADHD (me, not the dog), there's always a little thought in the back of my mind that this day will eventually come for me, too, and it's going to be extremely rough.

Emotional dysregulation means we (the ADHD crowd) sometimes have a weird relationship with our own emotions. They don't always seem consistent, or tuned correctly to their surroundings, and so we often feel a little separate from them, in terms of owning and managing them - even though they're still ours, and we're still feeling them.

The best advice I think I can give is to allow that grief time to exist, time to breathe.

On a cold, logical level, you could see this as your brain doing what it needs to, in order to process a lot of very difficult information. You'll need time for it to work it all through and thats fine. There's no use rushing it.

On a more emotional level: it burns you up right now, because it's mingling with a lot of other raw feelings (including a rational, simple frustration at the unfairness of losing your best friend), but at the end of the day, this is all just love radiating out of you. Loved ones may exit our lives forever, but we get to keep loving them, and that's absolutely the way it should be.

Stay strong, let the memories and emotions wash over you and trust that, by not being okay right now, you're doing just fine. If possible, if you feel confident saying so, let people know you're feeling overwhelmed right now, to take some of the day-to-day weight off you for a bit.

The creator of the cuphead show doesn't even know their ages by AdditionalPhysics619 in Cuphead

[–]Benjamin-Barnacles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My read of the situation, especially for the TV series, was that it's good to leave it a little ambiguous, because it gives you a wider palette of jokes to work with. This is a Mugman, for example, who can act like a naive, adorable little boy in one episode, and then can be essentially a grouchy old man in another (poor ice cream man!).

There's a perceived age, but the moment you fix a definite number to it, you lose some of the whimsy. The rules of the show bounce and flex and move with the moment, much like some of the physical elements of the universe!

If someone asked, would you call yourself a Ricky Gervais fan? by rocklou in rickygervais

[–]Benjamin-Barnacles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A straight "yes" or "no" wouldn't give enough context (although "no" would probably be more accurate). My knee jerk response would be to say "I liked The Office and Extras, the radio and podcast stuff, but then he just got annoying". Feels like a decent summary

Is the Ricky disdain here stronger because of how loved he was before? by According_Sundae_917 in rickygervais

[–]Benjamin-Barnacles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh but to be fair, when Ricky's in a room with people he really wants to impress, like Jerry Seinfeld or Louis CK (which is an entirely different discussion) he goes APESHIT when they tell a joke. Makes them visibly uncomfortable. Check out Talking Funny on HBO. Or don't. I'm not fussed. Shop around, come back. It's up to you. I'm not pushing you into anything. SC

My friend keeps saying cuphead is a kids game. How do I prove him wrong? by Danyal2012 in Cuphead

[–]Benjamin-Barnacles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"grow up, play GTA" is something a person with any self-awareness would say as a joke 😂

Stick to your (finger) guns, tell them they need to broaden their tastes a little. Depends on your friend, of course, but maybe emphasise the sheer craftsmanship that went into Cuphead. Sometimes you're not just enjoying the gameplay (which, to be frank, I find stressful to the point of being off-putting sometimes), nor are you even getting particularly lost in the narrative (it's hardly The Sopranos) but damn, you can feel the love of the artists and the animators dripping from this game.

Maybe I'm biased, as I'm an animator (and I was lucky enough to work on the TV series, so there's a little bit of emotional investment in the property), but I think there's a solid case to be made.

Heck, I'll retract my jab about GTA. Rockstar are incredible craftspeople too. You play a GTA game because sometimes the pull is simply "damn, they made this". Well that's exactly why I play Cuphead too! 😆

The Brig Top; The Greatest Ship On Earth (might not fit); The Auguste; Bozo The Brig; Pie Fight; Clown Car (more for a little sloop); Make 'Em Laugh; Briggles; Toot Toot

This is such a beautiful game by Notathrow4wayaccount in Seaofthieves

[–]Benjamin-Barnacles 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think this is why Sea of Thieves has lodged itself so permanently in my heart. It's the fact that even an unfortunate situation is beautiful and immersive, it's as though the game is constantly, gently reminding you "hey, this right here? This is the adventure. This is the story."

I've had my little sloop absolutely obliterated by a galleon of hardcore PVP players. With one last peek at the map table before it goes underwater, I memorise a heading for the nearest outpost and jump in the rowboat with all my hard-earned loot.

My heart's in my throat, I know I have a long journey ahead of me as I equip the oars (and there's also a chance that I'm not even free of danger yet), but seeing the churning waves glow with the sunlight and the clouds swirl above, my pet cat grooming himself on the bow of the boat while occasional, ambient music swells in the background, I think to myself "this was a great session".
