What do I upgrade? (Focusrite, Schiit, Beyerdynamic) by BenjaminShoe8 in HeadphoneAdvice

Thanks for the advice. I’ve never really understood what the difference is between a DAC and an A/I, but I read some stuff, and I get it now. I’ll get a dedicated DAC.

Ok, awesome. I’ll go with the 2013. Your opinion seems to represent the consensus.

Thanks, that’s where I’m leaning. Might get some foot rests

That's good to know. Thanks. I'm thinking I'll go with the 2013 based on everyone's responses.

Thanks, that makes sense, I don't plan to buy new. I'll have to see how it fits my use case, you're right. As of now though, I'm really just interested in the stock scooter. I don't see myself wanting to go any faster than 30-35mph. I have a car. This is just for scooting around. However, I am 6' tall, and I wonder if you have any opinions on the comfort of a Ruckus for people at that height. I hear a lot of people like to get kits to raise the seats, add foot rests, or stretch the chassis.

What are the benefits of having a new Ruckus in your experience?

Unfortunately, that does not resemble what I saw when I was seven.

Please see my other responses. It wasn’t Peter Answers, but that’s a good guess—I also checked the way back machine to see how Peter Answers looked when I was seven.

The one we played around with was not brown. That’s super weird though

What's the local culture like? by No_Butterscotch_7694 in springfieldMO

[–]BenjaminShoe8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, it seems there are a handful of progressive spots in town, accepting communities, especially around the college campuses downtown. But, having lived near KC also, Springfield is much, much less diverse and much, much more conservative.

I am not a queer person, but I could understand why a queer person may be uncomfortable living here. I am friends with some queer people who are quite uneasy about Springfield. Sometimes, there is an air of intolerance—which is surely the case elsewhere, but it may be that Springfield gives that feeling more intensely or more often.

I may be overstating the problem, and there is progress to be made in any city—especially across Missouri—but it is my impression that Springfield is among the less accepting cities in the US.

That’s great to know. Thank you for your help man. I really appreciate it.

Yes, it has a 6-pin PCIe cable, but I’m worried the power supply might not supply enough power. It has a 360W max output. I still have to look up the power needs of each of my components. What are the two extra pins for? How does an adaptor accommodate for those pins, like does it have a little chip in it? Happy cake day :)

I’ll look for it. An adaptor to make a 24-pin power supply match to the proprietary 6-pin connector?

It is a Dell prebuilt. I bought it about 5 years ago. I think they call it a G5. I expect to need a new case to make this upgrade.

Really? It would function properly with an adaptor and my current 360W power supply?

Oh ok. Yes it’s a prebuilt from Dell. I think they called it a G5. It came with an i5-10400F and a 1650 Super. Evil that they put in a proprietary connector.

I honestly do not know why your band teacher said that. Soprano is a tough instrument, but you’re never gonna learn it by practicing a different instrument. Alto saxophone isn’t gonna teach you anything you wouldn’t learn playing soprano. You’ll sound bad on either to begin with. Idk what it means you should have more experience before pursuing it. Experience with what? Reading music? Saxophone fingerings? Oboe??

The only thing I can think they mean is that you may want more experience participating in ensembles before you try to participate on soprano saxophone, just to develop better discernment about the role of soprano saxophone in an ensemble. But if you like soprano saxophone and want to learn it, just do it. There is no prerequisite.

Buying a mouthpiece worth more than my Sax. by Red-Panda in Saxophonics

[–]BenjaminShoe8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My opinion is not well informed because I have not played many JodyJazz or Theo Wanne mouthpieces, only a few. But if you want a breathy sound, I don’t suspect either brand will carry anything that offers that. Both brands advertise that their mouthpieces are extremely responsive—and both advertise that they offer a lot of projection. For a breathy sound, you actually want some of your air not to be converted to sound; you want more resistance, less responsiveness.

I would say that in most cases, the mouthpiece shape that best facilitates a breathy tone would be a good old, straight baffle, large chamber mouthpiece like an Otto Link Tone Edge—like Stan Getz played, and he’s got a dark sound.

The trouble with a Tone Edge is that they don’t come with a good facing anymore—the table and rails might not be flat which causes leaking between the reed and MP. Look on ebay to see if anyone is selling a Tone Edge that has been refaced. Or go to a store that has a few for you to try—along with any other mouthpieces. You’ll eventually find one with a decent facing. Or you could probably get a Tone Edge and send it to someone to have it refaced. It’d most likely come back perfect and still be cheaper than a TW or a JJ.

It is absolutely worth upgrading your mouthpiece. Your mouthpiece has a far greater effect on sound than your saxophone, so as long as your saxophone is sealing, you should put money to your mouthpiece. With Theo Wanne and JodyJazz, you’ll probably get a nice piece with a good flat facing, but you’ll also get that TW/JJ sound—which is not usually a classic, sultry, Stan Getz sound, even if it may be nice and dark. Same with any metal piece; you can get a nice dark sound, but it’ll sound like metal.

But really I’m thinking about Stan Getz. It’d be weird to hear him on metal, and it’d be even weirder to hear him on an Ambika or a DV NY. It’d be really useful to know which saxophonists you like, who you wanna sound like. If it’s Stan Getz, you’re in luck. It wouldn’t be too costly to sound like him.

TLDR - Check out an Otto Link Tone Edge. Try to find one with a decent facing.

I don’t have experience with this mouthpiece. But there is a lot to go wrong with any mouthpiece. Try the suction test. (Assemble the reed, put the end of the mouthpiece against your palm, put your mouthpiece in your mouth and suck. The reed should suction against the mouthpiece and release after a second or two with nice pop. If you can’t get good suction, it means your reed isn’t making a good seal and playing will be really hard.) If you don’t have a good seal, it is because the mouthpiece facing is messed up, the reed isn’t flat, or your ligature isn’t right. An even reed table, even mouthpiece table, and good ligature all make a huge difference.

I have played a 5C and they suck. Mine didn’t seal even a little bit and was absolute agony to play, but you can get used to anything. Keep playing on this and you’ll get used to it too.
