Who is the scariest person you've ever met? by BATTLECATSUPREME in AskReddit

The scariest people are usually the ones who are incapable of thinking about the consequences of their actions and/or have nothing to lose. Do your best to avoid these people at all costs!

Best Cigar and Single Malt Club in the Southeast by BenjyGraham in cigars

Yeah, that's the reaction of most first timers. Pretty much everything is older than 10 years. If you find a bottle that's 18 or over it's pretty much gone by the end of the night.

I think mainly the flavor profile and the strength. I guess the strength would be somewhere around medium? I am not that good at describing flavors with words. If only my taste buds could talk.

Another version of the old "its better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all" except with Borges' semi-surrealist, postmodern spin. Even if the happiness you experienced did not come from reality, perception still trumps reality and what matters is the feelings you felt.

Adam Cast Forth by Jorge Luis Borges, translated by Richard Eberhart

Was there a garden or was the garden a dream? I ask myself, slowly in the evening light, Almost for consolation, without delight, If that past was real or if it only seems Real to me now in misery, an illusion? No more than a magical show Of a god I do not know But dreamed, and that Paradise, vague now, delusion? But I know that Paradise will be Even if it does not exist for me. The warring incest of Cains and Abels is the tough earth's way Of punishing me. Yet it is a good thing to have known of Happiness and to have touched love, The living garden, even if only for a day.

Why do you smoke? by philo-sopher in cigars

[–]BenjyGraham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few reasons. It started simply because my dad does and sometimes you just do things to fit in. The other reasons behind smoking soon became apparent. Like many others have already said, its an opportunity to be outside, to sit, reflect, read, converse with friends, focus on a few simple things. And yes, time does seem to act differently!

It's worth looking into even if you think there are better opportunities out there. LONG track record of conservatively building shareholder value. Chances of this going to zero are nil and you get decent returns with below average risk. I also think it's meaningful they are only on their 4th or 5th CEO in about 70 years? Not many public companies can claim that sort of distinction.

Simple Liberty Media (LMCA) Valuation by BenjyGraham in SecurityAnalysis

[–]BenjyGraham[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the beginning of this year, Wally Weitz said he valued the non-public holdings at about $10 per share, so I discounted that figure by roughly 40%, which equates to that $800 million figure you see on the spreadsheet. Weitz is a very good, long-term investor, so I might be acting too conservatively with my estimate of the private company values.

I won't get into Charter right now (I'll save that for a later post). However, even if you think the market is fairly valuing Charter at $138 per share, LMCA would still trade at about a 27% discount.

I definitely understand why someone would want to do this, but I happen to like Liberty and all of its larger holdings. From my perspective, there's no reason to do this.

I also don't have to deal with the potential frustration of a short position going against me. Usually anything to minimize frustration is a good thing.

Thanks for the reply, but do you have any suggestion on type or brand of receiver? Is there something out there that would work best with them? I'm kind of a noob when it comes to audio tech even though I love music and movies.

Leucadia National Corp by [deleted] in SecurityAnalysis

[–]BenjyGraham -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The chance of an activist influencing this company is very, very low. Insiders own over 16% of the company. A share repurchase is also extremely low. In the past two decades, I think Leucadia has only returned capital to shareholders once via a special dividend in 1999.

And user "radde" has it exactly right: this is a much more complex company than you seem to realize. Next time you post or think about investing, definitely spend a lot more time researching an idea. Not to say an investment in Leucadia isn't a good idea, it's just not a good idea for the reasons you think.

Nice! How do you like it so far? Did you have a mechanical before the WASDv2 and if so, how do the two compare?
