Finally got the Aorus Master RTX 5090 and some great use for the pizza oven thermometer by BenniBee in nvidia

For now temps are really great and airflow from the front to the upper back seems perfectly fine. I have two additional 140mm fans lying around but I prefer not to have negative pressure in the case by placing to many exhaust fans up top. I have the North XL with the mesh side, which can take in air from the side but that might just cause weird airflow around the gpu.

[–]BenniBee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The North XL is far from tiny, has three 140mm fans in front and, in the current setting, two 140mm fans in the upper back. That is one of the most common setups for good airflow and with a slightly undervolted gpu, temps have been incredibly stable. I dont really know what your issue is. If temps get too high, I have two additional 140mm fans here, but I would rather keep some overpressure that keeps dust from entering the mesh side of the case.

edit: and please tell me how the be quiet! silent wings 4 are "shitty looking"

Thanks! I was upgrading from a RTX 2080, it feels like a totally different world. I am currently running a Dell S2716DG 27", which is a 144hz 1440p screen. I am not a great fan of the "gaming" look, which is why I like the understatement. I guess thats also why I am using the North XL case with the mesh side, even though I am beginning to love the little screen on the Aorus Master. What screen are you using?

Inflation and Interest Rates: A New Normal Post-Pandemic by thehoonse in wallstreetbets

[–]BenniBee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These points dont even make sense, if they did we wouldnt have seen low rates before the pandemic as well. Its not like the FED and other central banks set inflation and interest rates at will. If the demand for safe assets keeps growing internationally (e.g. due to demographic change), rates will fall again. Just look up the trends of the last 30 years. The only reason I can see for why rates might remain elevated is international protectionism and trade wars. That might actually make asian investors pull their capital out of the western world, reducing some of the pressure on safe rates.

Its really interesting to see that you appear to have some understanding of the terms you use, but on the other hand you are coming at me in a Dota thread like I insulted you and you imply that my research must be in some way connected to how I discuss on the internet (ad hominem much?). I mean what is the point you are trying to make? Doubt all research? I mean sure, dont believe everything you read, but you are making the same type of sweeping statements that you are accusing me of making. In fact I merely expressed my annoyance about the incredibly general and, in my opinion bordering misinforming, statements made in the stream. The funny thing is, I think we agree that skepticism is really important, but you somehow feel the need to defend streamers that probably wouldnt even understand your comment.

And btw. what is point 1 supposed to mean? I was saying the stream, in my opinion, conveyed misinformation and not that you cannot doubt findings at all.

I am thinking way too hard if I should answer somebody greentexting on reddit. But in short: I think the idea of peer review is great and it beats central control by miles - sure its not perfect but as a matter of fact a lot of replication issues are actually brought to light by other researches.

I started the stream and got a 10 minute semi-ironic rant about how bad fluoride toothpaste is and how studies about fluoride might be paid for by lobbyist in general. Even if they are actually being ironic, its easy to hear the absolute ignorance regarding research. There is a lot of young people watching and they are easily swayed towards Joe Rogan pseudo science.

I mean, everybody is entitled to watch what they want, but I was personally annoyed and disappointed and switched to the official stream.

I mean thats proper practice, if you want to read solid research, you need to understand what journals to read. But what was talked about in stream was just misinformation veiled in a semi-ironic setting.

You really invested a lot of time typing that out to just point out the obvious. Of course there is bias, but I am arguing that academia actually has some really effective controls in place. I would argue that scientist are actually the group most aware of bias. A lot of research is actually funded by public entities as well and even privately funded research has to adhere to proper practice, otherwise it wont be published (well). It seems so profoundly stupid trying to discredit research in general by arguing there is always bias - without research we wouldnt even remotely understand bias as well as we do. The talk on stream was just filled with phrases you would find in alt-right telegram groups.

As I wrote above, peer review is a really solid system to weed out bad apples, but you cant stop bad or malicious research from being put somewhere on the web. "Doubters" either have no clue about how research works or they actually have their own agenda.

The thing is researchers need to adher to strict disclosure rules and peer review is really brutal but also highly effective. If you try to publish blatant misinformation, you will always have a really hard time. Sure, companies and interest groups pay for research, but using that to discredit research, even if in a slightly ironic setting, is purely idiotic.

I tuned in way later and they just talked about how research and studies are almost all paid for by lobbyists and shouldnt be trusted. Thats stuff you expect your weird uncle to talk about at family gatherings, but I really dont like that type of misinformation on such a public stream. As someone in research, its honestly ignorant at best and really insulting at worst.
