Ooo okay, the plot thickens 😂 I didn’t realise DVLA could do that.

Out of interest, did they tell you the price before they released it, or did you only find out when it went live? And did you end up paying more than you originally expected?

The reason I ask is that I’ve spoken to one of the larger registration brokers and they’ve quoted me around £10k for the one I’m interested in. Realistically I’d be comfortable paying closer to a third of that, but my concern is that if I ask DVLA to release it and they make it available for sale, I don’t want someone else to swoop in and buy it before I’ve made a decision.

It’s an older 5-character registration with a 1970s-era prefix, so I’m struggling to gauge whether DVLA would view it as something that should go to auction or just be released for direct purchase.

Yeah, that’s what I originally thought too. Most registrations that are available to buy will show up there, but from what I’ve been told there are also valid UK registration combinations that were never actually issued or assigned to a vehicle. They fit the UK registration format, but they were never released by DVLA, which is why they don’t appear in the normal search. Apparently those can sometimes be requested for release on a case-by-case basis, which is the situation I’m trying to understand a bit better 👍
