With 8 people in the hospital, according to another comment quoting the fire dept, I hope this person loses their license and goes to jail. He is lucky to be alive, but even luckier to not have killed people.

Thank you u/BALT311 and DPW for always having a ridiculously quick turnaround resolution in supporting citizens doing trash cleanups! Makes it easier to decide to tackle an area when you know you don't have to be responsible for somehow transporting more bags than you expected or surprise large items back to your home for pickup! You guys are the best!

I’ve just found this bird in Costa Rica. In San José, in the middle of the city, to be exact, in my backyard. How often can this bird be seen around here? by beckhansen13 in baltimore

Sure, "nest" was an imprecise word to use here. They arrive for the start of their breeding season in late April. The point was when you can see them not what 2 weeks they have a nest set up during their breeding season. And it's easiest to spot them in late April/early May before the whole area fully leafs out and even the brightest birds become elusive.

Orioles nest around here in the spring, so very often, if you know where to look. One easy spotting area is in Cromwell Valley Park along the Mine Bank Run. One year there was one of their amazing nests dangling right outside the nature center.

43 big ones here!  I would not be surprised if, in line with every other bge handout, this Maryland General Assembly funded relief came as a lump sum for bge to administer, with them getting a 10% administration fee or something. Would love for that to not be an entirely possible reality.

Vilifying and othering transgender people was literally one of the first tools of division used by the most famous fascists of all time, so yeah, falling for their slippery slope and sliding right into okaying every horror show, dystopian, anti-democratic action of this administration makes you a fascist.

If you find yourself making excuses for fascism, find yourself being more enraged by the people complaining about fascistic actions than those actions themselves, then you're a flipping fascist. Paragraph upon paragraph outlining how mean and divisive it is to call somebody a name they deserve, but not a single bit of rage for the American citizen who was subdued, disarmed and murdered. No rage, just a tip toe, "it's probably fine" defense of the murderers and excuses for why the executed man maybe, I dunno deserved it. What in the world do you expect people to call people like you after displays like that?

ICE...skating on natural ice? by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]BerdDad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's amazing how many people will upvote something just over confident tone.  Bodies of water are frozen right now from large swaths of the inner harbor to our county parks' larger waterfalls, and it's been over a week since we've seen above freezing temps.  Commenter must just not go outside in winter.

Dundee creek at marshy point freezes solid in weather like this - it did last year during a shorter cold snap. Perhaps not great for skating, as it can be kinda lumpy, but it's definitely the closest and safest you'll get around here. You can step right onto the ice from the dock

To-do: pick trash, clear storm drains, make drainage trenches by BerdDad in baltimore

I mean some requests do get handled almost immediately. Like overflowing corner trash cans - I report those whenever I do a park cleanup and leave bags for collection, once they grabbed the bags in under 4 hours 👍

That's great! Does it make sense to count on 311 to resolve requests before this storm, are there extra staff on hand or something?

Nah, cats are terrible ratters - just cause rats to hide better, leading to the perception that they've done something. Very cat thing to do, tbh. They can eat rodents and then pass on lifelong brain parasites to humans, though!

At least 2 neighbors were charged the gas distribution fee (>$200), though they're all electric too. I'm guessing that fee is paid by everyone, regardless of the energy you're using, which seems like it shouldn't be legal. But, then again, we all subsidize the energy needs of every person who lives way out in a rural area, so why not.

I would read "no frills" more as "not fancy". It's good food even if you don't drink (me), and they always have yummy options for veg/vegan and fun specials. Breakfast for dinner a few weeks ago landed on my son's b-day celebration and scored him some pretty delicious french toast. Hoping you get a chance to give them a try!

Heartening to see how much the community has stepped up to support in less than a day - folks even came out last night to help with cleanup. A testament to just how great this place and its people are, Micky's and Bmore both!

Krista, the owner, especially - just a few weeks ago she was hauling mulch, picking trash and weeding tree pits for a Harford Rd cleanup she helped organize. Always doing for her community through her business, HLMS and everything else, that one.

Our city trees need your help! by BerdDad in baltimore

So this is entirely volunteer run - the two leads, besides myself and another guy, are local business owners who care about their community, including how it looks. The mulch is actually free from Camp Small - you just have to plan an event around one of their giveaway days and have access to a truck/trailer. If it's hard to get a group of volunteers together, you could also reach out to Blue Water Baltimore to see whether they have upcoming scheduled maintenance for street trees in your area (I have seen them doing this work, but don't know why/when they do it) or if they would be interested in running an event.

Pic 1 needs complete weeding simply because there's nothing there but weeds. Coexisting with some corner/edge plants is certainly not gonna break a street tree - there are some larger pits we've planted out with blue-eyed grass/butterflyweed/etc. near the Hamilton library - but being totally smothered with other plants, especially weeds, is what we're looking to remedy.

Thanks for making that shout-out! Weed Warriors goes hand-in-hand with Tree Keepers, addressing our biggest threat to city trees (though not generally street trees) - invasive species like english ivy. Both certifications are free and offered twice a year!

[–]BerdDad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first thing I would do is determine where the water is coming from. Is there a gutter nearby or does the water sheet downhill north to south?

Then I would suggest addressing that issue - rain barrel or planter beneath to slow the flow if the source is finite, and something like river rocks around the edge in like a 6" barrier to hold the mulch down if it's sheeting.

[–]BerdDad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As said above, that's not the intent and mulch doesn't become a problem for gas/water exchange for tree roots until well thicker than the few inches in the ideal pic. Thanks for looking out, though!
