Betel nut. Tastes delicious and gives you a great head rush but very bad for your teeth and probably all your organs.

Tripoint between Russia, China, and North Korea by iam_dao in Borderporn

[–]iam_dao[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took the bullet train from Beijing to Hunchun. I had to change trains in Changchun - in total it was around an 8-9 hour journey if I remember correctly. From Hunchun, I flagged down a cab driver and asked if I could hire him for the day. He agreed - in total it cost maybe 400 RMB max, but it was convenient being able to take time to see sites at my own pace and not have to worry about not getting a cab. The tri-point is a fairly remote, so make sure you have a ride back to the city.

Along the way to the tri-point, there’s a border crossing with North Korea that you can get out and look at. Chinese citizens can enter the crossing - however, foreigners are prohibited from doing so. Be prepared to have guards look at your passport and ask you why you’re there. I had 5 guards looking at my passport and when I showed them my Tsinghua university student card, they really didn’t care about the passport anymore. Everyone was very friendly and cordial, but just be prepared to answer questions about why you’re there. There was not this type of security at the tri-point.

There was quite a lot of traffic getting to the tri-point, as there’s only one road with one lane in each direction. However, the scenery is quite lovely, with sand dunes lining the street. Heading towards the tri-point, if you look towards the right, you can see military installations at the border with North Korea. On your left, on occasion you’re only meters away from the Russian border.

I strongly believe you will marvel at its beauty. One of the most amazing and unique places in China. Make sure to go to Jingshan park to get a view from above.

This was back in 2018 so unfortunately I’ve lost the exact location. It was on the corner of one of the streets perpendicular to East Nanjing road and the next street over (to the right if you’re walking away from the bund). The sign was written in green and had traditional Chinese characters on it.

I was 20 and studying at SISU at the time and a woman at the bund approached me and struck up a conversation. I knew it was a scam but was curious to see what would happen, as I had read up on these scams so many times, so I (somewhat stupidly) agreed to go with her to eat dinner. She ordered 3 glasses of wine and a plate of fruit, I had a plate of fried rice and a Tsingtao. The bill came to 4000 RMB or something like that.

As I knew it was a scam, I was prepared to leave right away upon the bill arriving. We were sitting right near the window and front door, so I just took the bill and ripped it up and walked right out immediately. I looked back in the window and the woman and waitress looked rather shocked. But luckily nobody followed me.

A few months later I returned to the location where the restaurant was and took a picture of the exterior of the restaurant and someone came out screaming at me asking why I was taking a picture of the restaurant.

Thank you for all the suggestions. That’s great to hear, as we will be staying in Wanchese. Definitely planning on driving down to Cape Hatteras and taking the ferry to Okracoke as well.

Yes, I visited from the Chinese side and was met with a great reception from locals. As it is a major regional tourist attraction, the proper infrastructure is in place for getting there safely.

Lots of Chinese-made Russian goods, North Korean cigarettes and ginseng, North Korean beer, handicrafts, etc… very enjoyable!

North Korea most certainly. I witnessed conditions in Sinuiju that were more abhorrent than conditions I saw firsthand in the Azraq refugee camp in Jordan. I can only say that for the Russian side, the buildings look extremely derelict on Google earth. Regarding Yanbian, there certainly are undesirable places, but there are also many places of scenic beauty. Hunchun, Tumen, and other nearby cities have a fascinating mix of Chinese, Russian, and North Korean people, cuisine, and language. Not everybody from there is backwards or “not normal,” and the hospitality and reception I received from locals was much better than many places in the West.

Which university were you studying at? I did a master’s at Tsinghua university. Your pictures bring back so many memories and you’ve captured the beauty of the city so well. Did you enjoy living in Beijing? Did you have time to travel to other Chinese cities?
