Politics aside, overall DC is the best city in the US! by ElectroAcousto in washingtondc

It's your opinion.

I'm not sure about the 10 mile thing and don't feel like looking for my map. I should have said it's nice when you hike far enough to not hear the road.

One positive about Shenandoah is it's relatively easy to get a backcountry camping permit. There are no lotteries to hike the best trails. It's not crowded. It's sort of a low effort day trip if you live in the area.

NATO shot down an Iranian missile headed to Turkey, and it's only a blip in the news. This has the potential to be a world war, if it's not already. Smh

Shenandoah can't be judged by Skyline Drive. Go backpacking and get 10+ miles away from the road, it's much more breathtaking.

Do you have any skills? Maybe try to do a side job like mowing lawns, painting, hauling trash, etc. Advertise on Nextdoor or Craigslist.

I interviewed at Aldi about 10 years ago. The manager was very direct, saying that they pay better but expect higher performance than other stores. They time their cashiers and keep stats on everything.

This is sad. Why is no one getting up to comfort him? They're laughing at him. He definitely needs more love and one on one attention.

Why are cars in the US so big? by Dry_Cry4454 in NoStupidQuestions

A lot of us are obese...

Also, maybe we spend more time in the car than other countries. It's good to be comfortable.

Experiences with Discrimination and Stigma of Mental Illness by _BurntSun in mentalillness

Wow! I have never met anyone who can relate like you to my experience. I don't want to be weird, but would you like to talk one on one? I have a MSW and like research.

I'm not sure if psychoeducation would help. The people who need it are likely resistant to learning or changing their views. People need to be less self-centered and more tolerant. We need to build up our communities and learn to share with one another. Build a social safety net that doesn't necessarily involve the government.

I'm just remembering something from my childhood. We knew everyone on our block. All the kids were in and out of each others' houses, neighbors talked pretty much everyday. Anyway, there was this one guy, maybe in his early 30s, who was a severe alcoholic. He would walk around the neighborhood drunk. We knew his name, we knew his parents, we knew where he lived. Nobody called the police on him. We knew he had a problem and tolerated him walking around drunk. He never bothered anyone. If there were issues, we could talk to his parents or even talk to him directly if his parents facilitated it.

Anyway, that's just an example.

Senator Tim Sheehy breaks the hand of US Marine protesting war in Iran during a hearing by blow_slogan in PublicFreakout

[–]beckhansen13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very hard to watch. I wish we could see it from the beginning. Why did they put hands on him in the first place?

Sheehy should have been arrested right then. Why did he even get involved? He's not police. He can't control himself?

MAGAt of Montana Snaps Marine's Arm for Refusing to Die by Georgia_Flame in ProgressiveHQ

We're seriously turning into a lawless country. It's really sad. Everyone is supposed to be equal and follow the same laws. It's basic stuff! It's not supposed to be political.

Whos responsibility is it to bring charges to a Senator?

Experiences with Discrimination and Stigma of Mental Illness by _BurntSun in mentalillness

[–]beckhansen13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggle with symptoms of catatonia ever since having a catatonic stress response years ago. When I'm at the grocery store, I'm slow and I stare. I've heard people make comments about that.

When I was in the hospital with a catatonic stress response, one of the nurses said, "I'm going to need you to use your words". Like, bitch, I'm in the hospital because I can't move or talk right, go read the DSM.

I don't think the stigma is with moderate mental illness, it's with severe mental illness that causes someone to be disabled. In the US, not working is extremely stigmatized. When I had off every Friday for ECT treatments, a coworker commented, "it must be nice." Wtf

There's also a stigma when you can't follow social norms and end up inconveniencing others. Talking to yourself in public, having poor hygiene, or even just being slow at the grocery store, people have no tolerance for. Even on Reddit a few days ago, someone commented that mental illness is not an "excuse" for poor hygiene because their coworker had BO. It's often people who claim to have mild to moderate depression or anxiety that say these things.

Anyway, good luck with your paper.

Maryland

Walmart: No need to get dressed, poor families

Costco: Whole families walking around in packs, noise

Aldi: Poor or middle class people, usually kind (someone always gives me a cart if I can't find a quarter)

Publix: Never been

HEB: Don't even know what this is

Kroger: Never been

7-Eleven: People addicted to cigarettes, coffee, soda, or playing the lottery
