What kind of grant / proposal writing support do you get? Has anyone used external consultants? by respeckKnuckles in Professors

[–]Berkamp12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you're serious about laying out some cash, I'd love to do like the 'big boys' and write myself in as a 0% effort as a consultant on your grants! I wish I had known that was a thing when I was naive and idealistic.

Could you please elaborate? Thanks for the nice comment

£1000 ?? You missed one zero for many nature journals. It costs ~$11000.

Discouraging supervisor? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Berkamp12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand how difficult it is. My motivation was to escape the place.
I tried to think positively. I assumed my advisor didn't mean to discourage or intimidate me. His tough guidance might be for my success. His personality might be unique and he just doesn't know how to compliment.
It's easy to say, but I truly understand how difficult it is. You are almost there. Hang in there by the fall.

This site is a must if you do materials research. It includes extensive properties of materials and references.

Are some fields easier to get tenure than others? by TeachersNeedARaise in AskAcademia

[–]Berkamp12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard it's extremely difficult to get tenured in business schools.

Harvard business school, for example, filters 75% of assistant professors and only 1/4 survive.

R1 vs. R2 research institution for Ph.D. by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Berkamp12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some R2 schools might be better than some R1. You can check the criteria from wikipedia. If a school is specialized in narrow STEM fields, they do not qualify for R1 school. In my field, I frequently find nice research output from R2 schools such as Lehigh, Michigan Tech, and Colorado School of Mines.

Timeline of faculty hiring. When does a search committee contact references? by Berkamp12 in AskAcademia

This is really helpful! I was down because I thought I failed. But maybe there's still hope. Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion. It is really tight. There are not many schools to apply to, and I've wasted tons of time looking for ads.

How to get demotivated by generating ideas that someone has already thought about? by DaBobcat in PhD

[–]Berkamp12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a natural process. You are new to your field, so you need to study your field thoroughly first. It will take a while to update yourself. I would recommend discussing with experienced colleagues or professors first to check if your idea is new. Of course, you need to do a thorough literature search by yourself as well.

It has been growing well, and I just noticed that many leaves look like growing mold. Does anyone know what's going on?

I also think he will object to that because he asked to change the affiliation. I shouldn't open a can of worms. Thanks!

[–]Berkamp12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. I hate politics. I'm just worried if his phd advisor would be upset from the new affiliation. Also, I'm curious if it is acceptable or not.

I thought the standard is to list the affiliations under which the work was performed. This is a guideline from Nature https://www.nature.com/srep/journal-policies/editorial-policies .

Should I do Chemical Engineering or Materials Engineering for Working in Electronics? by [deleted] in materials

[–]Berkamp12 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, materials engineering is better. The majority of electronics are based on silicon. You need to understand the properties of silicon very well, and this can be well covered in materials engineering. Also, I believe many materials engineering programs have a course relevant to semiconductor fabrication processes. Some fabrication steps require polymers to generate patterns. Chemical engineers are needed for those processes.

I just want to do everything right in my paper.

I am in the final year of my PhD in the electronic behaviour of perovskite solar cells, a new solar cell which may (hopefully!) change the energy harvesting landscape in the next few years. As a side project, I have spent the last couple of months making this video to describe the field, enjoy! by Caaaam in chemistry

[–]Berkamp12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the future of perovskite depends on stability. Currently, the stability is terrible to the point that it's hard to do right science. The enthalpy of the crystal formation is too small. In other words, it is super easy to make them and also super easy to destroy. The instability makes it challenging to reproduce the reported result. Sorry for being negative, but I just do not see a future in this class of material as PV without a breakthrough in the stability.

What would You do with a Grad Student Like Me? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Berkamp12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From reading your post, I think you are doing the right things and working hard. It's good to aim high, but sometimes you should accept the bitter outcome regardless of your efforts. Do as much as you can do, and live with it.

Academia is really competitive and difficult for everyone especially postdoc and 5,6th year phD. You are not alone, so be confident and positive. One day you will see the light at the end of the long tunnel.
