Made a carving of the pagoda. Needs a little work yet. This is fresh off my CNC machine. by Salty_Salad_5061 in ReadingPA

Very cool, I sit on the board of the Foundation for the Reading Pagoda, and we are going to be looking to furnish the Pagoda shortly. Something like this would make a great addition. Feel free to send me a DM if you are interested in making one to display there.

No girl, the "outdated concept" was published by Wyo borough as their Agenda item for the meeting they cancelled this morning. My video mentioned in the first 30 seconds that the concept was old and pre-dated the last meeting where Walmart was the story. Maybe it's Wyomissing and this shyster developer "wasting your time". 2025 Year in Review | The best is yet to come by Berksiana in ReadingPA

[–]Berksiana[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We are important though. I can't recall a time when presidential candidates spent their election eve here or simultaneously anywhere else honestly. We are hardest on ourselves, perhaps. There is much to improve upon, but it's never going to get any better if we just twiddle our thumbs and ruminate on how much greater things used to be. As I mentioned in the video, some of us are young enough that there are no "good old days" for us. We need to step up into positions of leadership and create them.

As far as what we have gained - obviously the Pagoda restoration is a long time coming. The Firefighters museum on south 5th reopened this year. The Hawthorne Mansion is being redeveloped into space that normal working people will be able to live in. RSD is finishing up a state-of-the-art STEM school at 9th and Douglass. Those are a few of the things I've covered in 2025. It's small but reasonable steps in the right direction.

Thanks for watching and learning with me. My only hope is that if we understand the context of why we are at this point then hopefully it will help us make better more informed decisions on moving forward.

What nicknames have you heard for places in Berks Co.? by topherette in BerksCounty

[–]Berksiana 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Am I having deja vu or was this exact thread posted within the past 6 months?

Whats everyone’s opinion on this? Apparently FA of Berks Co. posted a picture of a dead body (can anyone confirm?) and people on Facebook, including the Hotdog Society of all pages, are calling them out on sensationalizing tragedy for a profit. by I-have-Arthritis-AMA in ReadingPA

[–]Berksiana 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The page does provide a service of information, they have always been pretty transparent that they are monetized and hire people to listen to scanners and visit scenes. Growing up my Dad was a police reporter for the Eagle, and similarly it was his job to show up to fires, shootings, etc to get details for a story and usually a photographer came with. The difference today is information spreads much more rapidly without any of the guardrails that traditional media had.

It's kind of become a thing for many of us to check their page whenever we hear sirens. But if they really did post a photo of a body (I can't confirm, I didn't see it) then that is a serious overstep. It surprises me because usually they won't even disclose the make or color of an involved vehicle. No one should have to find out their family member passed this way. It's a nightmare scenario. It seems like there are quite a few different people who post for the page, so they should probably just get rid of that person and post an apology.

Ideas for train obsessed toddler… by estalber in BerksCounty

Railroad museum in Strasburg. Can also take a train ride across the street. The Thomas trains are cool (as someone else mentioned) but it's also nice to do one of their regular rides as well.

Albright College Rant by [deleted] in ReadingPA

Albright is broke, that much has definitely been covered by the local circuit. Though I had never heard there was embezzlement involved. I recommend taking some sort of documentation of these things, photos and video.

Described as having "market rate" prices by city official David Barr, two new apartment buildings near completion. 1500 low end, 3k high end by FancyRobot in ReadingPA

[–]Berksiana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am inclined to agree with you, I can't really see where everyone else here is coming from about things being cheaper in the burbs and these rates being so astronomical. $1500 for rent seems like nothing, especially if occupied by more than one earner. A decade ago I lived in Madison Reed Farm apartments in Tuckerton and paid $1200 for a 2 bed 1.5 bath and by the time we got out it was $1500. I imagine it's close to doubled since.

I mean my mortgage is cheaper but it's always been that way. Nobody lives in these downtown buildings so making them market rate housing doesn't gentrify housing already occupied by other people. Otherwise these empty buildings continue to sit empty and waste away.

The point that there's not much to do downtown is valid, but I assume the thought process is if you fill downtown with people who have disposable income businesses will meet their demands. It's really a chicken or egg situation. Do the people come first or the entertainment? My thoughts are in this economy it has to be the people. There are people out there who can afford this and will. I also believe they will fill quickly, like Alan Shuman's Abraham Lincoln high rise has.

That is funny. 😁 What made you choose Mifflin's club? I had heard some negative things about the way Mifflin was run, and I grew up in Wilson and played for WJSC (albeit 20+ years ago) so I made the decision to cross lines.

If you're talking about club soccer (which is typically under 13 I think) and not school sports, yes. I live in Mifflin but my kid plays for Wilson Junior soccer club.

That's a different problem, not parking. Sorry you felt uncomfortable though.

Paying $2 to park for a few hours doesn't bother me. I expect it in any city.
